Tonight, I’m venturing into the world of English Sparkling Wine to see if global warming has finally made us a rival to the French.

The Sabering:
I decided to go a bit non-traditional and opened the bottle using a hammer. It worked, but that was probably the highlight of the evening!

The Experience:
Traditionally, the best bubbles come from France, and after tonight, I can see why. It is definitely carbonated, and it is definitely wine, but… oh golly. The face I made says it all! It has a very unique profile that I wouldn’t exactly call a favorite.

The Verdict:
I think I’ll be leaving the sparkling wine production to our friends across the Channel. This would not be my go-to choice, but at least I can say I’ve tried it! Cheers? (Maybe).

Have you found an English Sparkling Wine that’s actually drinkable, or should we stick to the Whiskey? Let me know below!

  1. Hi there. As a Welshman i'm more than happy for you to slag off the English but before you completely write off English sparkling wine may I suggest a bottle of Nyetimber.

It's about £1m a bottle so you might have to beg or steal.

  2. Some English Sparkling Wine is truly top quality, recommend Nyetimber, Burn Valley and Flint Charmat. As with any drink you can get duff ones!
French Champagne houses are buying up several grape vines in the UK as climate change is making the areas closer to the Champagne region, as itself is getting too hot.

  3. I need to flex one day by sabering a bottle. Never done it, but I'll practice. Is there any worry about shards/slivers of glass? It's a perfectly clear "cut"?
