French fries aren’t actually from France.
They originated in Belgium over 400 years ago, when people started frying potatoes as a substitute for fish during winter. The name came later during World War 1, when American soldiers heard French being spoken and assumed it was French food.
One simple mistake… and the name stuck forever.
