When the Nazis occupied France in 1940, one of their main targets wasn’t gold, but rather its highly coveted French fine wine stocks. Hitler wanted to make Germany the cultural center and centre of world luxury, and that included having the finest collection of wine from the Champagne, Bordeaux and Burgundy regions.

The Nazi’s appointed a figure called the “Weinführer”, that is German wine experts sent to France to confiscate the best bottles. They looted millions of bottles from famous restaurants such as La Tour d’Argent in Paris and other legendary wine cellars.
