I learned from chef Frank Proto, that if you let your bread dry out, it’ll absorb better and won’t be too soggy and break when you’re soaking the bread in the custard.
Serving size: 2

Stale French bread or preferred bread
1/4 tsp Nutmeg
Orange Zest
Salt
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1/4 cup Sugar
Vanilla extract
2 Eggs
Powder sugar (optional)

Slice a couple pieces of bread, about an inch or two. And let them sit on the counter with a kitchen towel on them overnight.

In a bowl, combine nutmeg, a bit of orange zest, a pinch of salt, heavy whipping cream, sugar, a splash of vanilla extract and two eggs.

Soak your bread and custard mix. Letting absorb for a couple minutes. About 5 minutes.

Melt a tablespoon of butter on a pan. And fry French bread until golden on both sides.

Serve with powdered sugar and a drizzle of syrup.

Enjoy with some scrambled eggs and some bacon! 🍳🥓
