April 30, 1863. Mexico. 65 French Foreign Legion soldiers on a routine convoy escort. They stop for coffee.

The coffee is never drunk.

2,000 Mexican soldiers surround them. Their captain — Jean Danjou — has a wooden prosthetic hand where his real hand used to be. He lost it in Algeria. He kept fighting anyway.

Danjou produces a bottle of wine and passes it around his 65 men. Each man drinks. Each man swears on the wooden hand: we fight to the last, we do not surrender.

They retreat to a crumbling hacienda and hold it for eleven hours against wave after wave of assault. Danjou is shot at noon. His lieutenant takes command, is shot. The second lieutenant takes command.

By late afternoon: three men standing. One bullet each. They fire them. Three Mexican soldiers fall. Empty rifles. They fix bayonets. They charge 2,000 soldiers.

The Mexican commander watches. He gives the order that defines this battle: ‘Do not kill them. They have earned their lives.’

His words about the men who charged him: ‘These are not men. They are demons.’

The wooden hand was found on Danjou’s body ten days later. It was taken to France. It is still there.

Every April 30 — for 160 years — the French Foreign Legion parades the wooden hand through the ceremony. Legion officers personally serve coffee to their troops. For Captain Danjou. The coffee he never got to drink.

No film has ever been made about this. You’re seeing it for the first time.
