Did you know sparkling wine is older than Champagne? Who actually invented sparkling wine?
The first recorded sparkling wine was made in Limoux, France, in 1531 by Benedictine monks at the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire. They created what is now known as Blanquette de Limoux—making it the earliest known sparkling wine in history.
Later, Dom Pérignon helped improve winemaking techniques in the Champagne region, while English scientist Christopher Merret documented how adding sugar could create sparkling wine through a second fermentation in 1662.
So while many people credit Champagne, the true origins of sparkling wine trace back to Limoux in 1531.
History is full of bubbles!
highly recommend to try Blanquette de Limoux produced by Antech, which is imported to Thailand by Tops Wine Cellar.
