Had a wonderful dinner recently with some amazing wines. The owner has one of the biggest wine collections I've ever seen, so it was a joy to pick a few bottles, without totally breaking the bank.
We almost started with a Selosse V.O., but the financially (slightly) more responsible choice was Krug 173eme. I've not had a V.O. so I can't compare it here, but Krug is always incredible. It paired incredibly well with a tuna and caviar dish and with a pizza(!) dish. The 173 is amazing right from the get-go and has a very silky, precise texture.
The PYCM Hautes Cotes de Beaune 2020 was a great transition and generally pairs well with food, but left a lot to be desired next to the others bottles we had that night. I love PYCM, but in hindsight we should've chosen a more expressive white from Burgundy, like a Montrachet or something similar.
The Cappellano was the star of the night for me. I'm a big Barolo fan and only had their Barbera before. Capellano is really hard to get and for some reason Japan (where the dinner was) gets a large Cappellano allocation. I was very surprised by how approachable this 2018 Barolo was – something I've never seen with any other Barolo's before. I usually would not open such a young wine, but the owner recommended giving it a try and he was absolutely right. It was approachable right from the start, with a very long finish and great complexity. Reminded me a lot of the very best Burgundy wines. Highly recommend the producer and the vintage, if you can get your hands on it.
