Hello,

I have some very nice wood ceiling all over.

Although, for some the rooms, i am wondering if i should not paint them a certain color so that it looks less "cabin-y". We can see that there are 3 colors of wood (wall 1, wall 2, floor). i don't really know what i should do with that. Is it legal to paint the bed wall a certain color ? Am i going to regret it ? If paint it is, are there any do's or don't i should keep in mind ? i will not touch the wood ceilings, but not sure about one or two walls.

[EDIT] Just bought the house. Haven't moved in yet.

Painting wood is nearly always a permanent change. Maybe you can mount a large tapestry behind the bed or something else that’s a temporary solution?

  2. 100% illegal. if you want to do something, get some rugs. It’ll calm the wood down and make it feel less cabiny, especially if they’re more modern rugs.

FWIW, I don’t think the room reads cabin at all.

It is illegal. You will be arrested and thrown in maximum security design prison for 900 years, unfortunately 🙁

It doesn’t look cabin-y at all! With the other features of the house as well as your more modern/clean decor, it does not look cabin-y. I think you’d regret painting. You can plug some photos into AI and see what it might look like, but I suspect it’ll give you very clean-looking painted wood, which is not what you’d really end up with if you painted that wood. The wood is not smooth and would not become smooth once painted, and you’d likely still see the knots and whatnot through the paint. It would not look clean and smooth, I suspect it would look much messier and not as polished as you’d like if you painted.

The modern decor you have is great. The wood adds necessary warmth and depth as well, since a lot of the decor is more modern. Don’t touch it! You’d regret it!

What you’ve done to the floors is bad enough.

No. Absolutely not legal. The law says you can paint any wood furniture that you want to. Expensive wood walls however are protected by Federal Good Taste in Design Commission. They recommend only painting items that can be stripped to return original unfinished state. Thus, painted wood walls and ceilings are a damn crime. The director of the commission said, “we are only trying to protect people from inevitable regret” in an interview with whatever magazine it was.
An alternative would be to construct a stretched canvas that covers the majority of the space. Using your favorite medium and method, slop it on that canvas. Voilà! Problem solved. You’re welcome.
    /s (kinda)

I’m a heathen that’s not above painting brick but even I wouldn’t touch that amazing wood.

Think Scandinavian instead of cabin and you can make that space amazing.

unless the residental property is a rental which you haven’t clarified, comestic changes such as interior painting aren’t structural changes so **painting any area of a residential dwelling interior** is **legal in NZ**
