Hi all! My fiancee and I own this home. It’s felt so dark and gloomy this winter. I love the coziness, but I’m struggling.

The sunlight does not come through the windows in the dining or living room due to an overhang. We had to stain the floors dark because the previous owner let her dogs pee everywhere and the dark was the only way to hide the stains (sooo gross). And then honestly, we love the green!

My fiancee also doesn’t like mirrors which I blame his mother for instilling a sense of superstition in an otherwise delightfully logical and grounded man lol

Here are my ideas so far –

– switch out the dark blue curtains everywhere to a linen

– switch out the rugs

– add more mood lighting

– maybe do a wallpaper mural of a landscape behind the shelves in the living room?

– wainscoting in the dining room with the same color trim

Absolutely agree on the curtains. I would get off white linen blend pinch pleats. Hang them higher and to the floor, it appears you already have them wider. I think just some more light/off white decor will really brighten this all up. I would also get rid of the Cafe curtains that hang mid window.

Neglected to add that lighter rugs would be helpful as well. Also a nice centerpiece for your table or some linen placemats

Change the walls into a lighter colour.

I think switching out the curtains to a warm color would help, or warm accents in general, as well as more lighting is a good idea. I think a good statement light for the ceiling for the dining room would look nice because the one there is getting swallowed up by the room.

Also, what are the shadows all over the ceiling? It’s the first thing my eyes went to.

The lights are the only thing screaming at me, theyre so yellow, makes it look old and sad. Maybe use a lighter yellow? Or somthing more soft but definetely less yellow.
