Please excuse the mess! We moved into this home in November. While I have some ideas I just haven't carried out yet, I'm still stuck on a few other things design-wise. I would really appreciate some suggestions!
I also want to note that we do typically have the shelf that's missing from the bookshelves inserted. We only took it them out for our Christmas decorations and haven't put them back yet. Also, the kitchen is on the opposite side of the half wall behind the couch, and the space pictured is completely open to the upper level loft as well. It's a split-level cape cod type of deal.
Here are my ideas that haven't been carried out yet:
- Sheer white curtains across the large window (what color hardware/curtain rod??)
- Family photos and knick-knacks on the book shelves, along with the actual books
- I know I want an accent table of sorts between the chairs, just not sure on style
Here's specifically what I'm stuck on:
- What do I do with that inset area above the fireplace?? The obvious choice would be to put a statement piece of art there, but what?
- I've gone back and forth on a coffee table and am leaning against having one, since we like the open space for playing with our little one, but am still open to suggestions if it would help pull things together
- I just feel like there are spaces with untapped potential in the room, like the space next to the chair on the right, the dark painted column/wall to the left of the fireplace. How do I accommodate/fill these (while understanding that not everything needs to be filled)?
- I do love color and more playful design, so I would be interested in hearing ideas of how to incorporate this more
Thanks so much in advance!

Really cool room! I personally think that the black and white rug doesn’t match the tones of the painted wall, green chairs, leather couch, and gorgeous woodwork and thing the space would look more cohesive with a rug with warmer earth tones that draw upon the red and beige colors of the fireplace and the green color of the chairs.
Is there a light centered directly above the fireplace? My eyeballs want to add lights to the empty spaces above the wooden cabinets.
Add another dog.
Your grays without accessories make the pic look like an A I pic LOL… so yes to big statement art with great colors there… you could do with a little round side table near the wall and hope it gets actual books in it that get read… it would look nice with a plant or three too.
