This is the closest thing we have to a mud room/coat closet….our landing heading to the basement. The stairs/landing are already EXTREMELY narrow. Keeping the shoes on the top landing blocks opening the door so I want to figure out some organization to keep them along the wall (a majority will be kept in our garage right outside that door but it’s not practical for them to all be out there all the time). We also live in a cold climate and the snow/salt situation has been a nightmare, so messy. Any ideas? I’m thinking of putting some shaker peg hooks all along the left and back wall for coats/bags etc but kind of at a loss for shoes. Also want it to look cute. Need inspo. Thanks!

I would put a couple of IKEA TRONES against that wall where the shoes current are.

Seconding IKEA TRONES. You can paint or ConTac paper them for some personality. I’d add a trio of framed prints above that.

Swap the black rug for one that has some color/pattern. It will be more cheerful and hide dirt better than all black.

Swap the coat rack for multiple, wall-mounted hooks like [this,](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Decorators-Collection-11-in-L-Satin-Nickel-Classic-Vertical-Coat-and-Hook-Rail-R43568H-SN-U/313491476), or [this](https://www.homedepot.com/pep/Home-Decorators-Collection-27-in-L-Satin-Nickel-Vertical-Metal-Hook-Rail-R43560H-SN-U/313491478?cm_mmc=psoc-pinprg-626757611246-2680088929654&utm_campaign=626757611246&utm_medium=PaidSocial&utm_source=Pinterest&utm_content=2680088929654&pp=0&epik=dj0yJnU9bDE5d0dMdTUtN2ctZ3BFTVo5U19JdDRXck42SUpZVDImcD0xJm49UFNPOTlfOUlRU1ZtTUNEbWRtMU1vZyZ0PUFBQUFBR21LSHRN), or [this.](https://www.ballarddesigns.com/orleans-wall-hook/730751?CAWELAID=120245430001119045&utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Ballard_LOW_CSALES_Prospecting_Pinterest-DABA-HighestValue&SourceCode=CON1107&utm_content=ALLPRODUCTS&pp=0&epik=dj0yJnU9RFBCRWMzRXowcnh5OUg0eW5fb1daT0liZk9ZY1RmeEgmcD0xJm49UEZod2tRMDlEQW1pWWZuWEJTal9KUSZ0PUFBQUFBR21LSHRN).

Opposite the coat wall, mount a small wall shelf (you can get a basic one or something [more decorative like this](https://www.ballarddesigns.com/newberry-wall-shelf/730549?SourceCode=CONNEXPUB&utm_source=Connexity&utm_medium=CSE&utm_campaign=Product_Feed&utm_content=CXSocial&intlShippingCtx=US%7CUSD&utm_term=17706596519930203113710161122008005&CAWELAID=120245430000660130&cnxclid=17706596519930203113710161122008005) for keys alongside a mirror.

I’d also swap the light for some sort of hanging/ dangling fixture that’s easy to clean and swap the bulb.

What’s in the area from which the picture is being taken? Is there room there for anything?

There are shoe racks that are slanted that can be hung on walls. They shoe spaces slant so that the shoes take up vertical space rather than space in the walking area. Also, can you put a shoe storage rack on the back of the door? I’ve even seen people cut these in half for a shorter space. So maybe hanging them on the stair railing? Depending on how stylish and pretty you want the area to be, of course.
