Baked Challah French Toast

Ingredients
• 1 large challah, slightly stale, cut into thick slices or cubes
• 4 large eggs
• 2 cups milk
• 1 cup plain yogurt (originally heavy cream)
• 1/3 cup brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 2 teaspoons cinnamon
• Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• Butter or oil, for greasing

For serving
• Maple syrup
• Fresh fruit
• Powdered sugar

Method
1. Prepare
Butter a baking dish and arrange the challah snugly inside.
2. Custard
Whisk eggs, milk, yogurt, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
3. Soak
Pour over the challah. Press gently so everything is well soaked.
Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
4. Bake
Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F.
Bake uncovered 40–45 minutes, until golden, puffed, and just set.
5. Serve
Rest 5 minutes. Finish with powdered sugar, fruit, and maple syrup.
