In this review I am tasting a fully mature wine from a well-respected Saint-Émilion estate in a great vintage. The wine is Chateau Canon la Gaffeliere Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe 2010, it is a wine that in 2013 was ranked #2 in Wine-Spectator’s annual Top 100 Wines List, an achievement reached 40 year’s after owner Cout Stephane von Neipperg’s father had purchaed the run-down estate for a bargain price.

Château Canon La Gaffelière is now a very well-regarded estate in Saint-Émilion, having been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classe (B) status in 2012 . The château has become known for the elegance and finesse of its Opulent modern style wines.
.
The Canon La Gaffelière estate began as two separate holdings in the 19th Century: Canon Boitard and La Gaffelière Boitard. They were combined when both were acquired by Count Joseph Von Neipperg in 1971. He was from a Wurttenburg family with a long heritage of winemaking. His initial investments included modernizing the cuverie.

Current proprietor Count Stephan von Neipperg (one of Joseph’s sons) came to Bordeaux and took over management of the estate in 1985. He now also owns and runs La Mondotte, Clos de L’Oratoire and Château Peyreau in Saint-Émilion, plus a few other Bordeaux estates.
1996 took the risk of engaging an unknown winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt as a consultant. Now a highly successful consultant Derennencourt made his name at Canon La Gaffelière.

  1. Opps I make a gaffe just at the outset, calling the wine a Saint Emilion Grand Cru, in 2010 it is of course a Grand Cru Classe – my apologies!
