Did you know France wasn’t always called France? 🇫🇷

Before France, the land was known as Gaul, home to Celtic tribes and then ruled by Rome. But after the empire crumbled, new tribes crossed the Rhine.

Among them were the Franks — fierce warriors from modern-day Germany and the Netherlands. Their name may have meant “free men” — or referred to their weapon of choice, the francisca throwing axe. 🪓

By the 5th century, the Franks had conquered Gaul. Their leader, Clovis I, united the tribes and converted to Christianity — laying the foundation of a new kingdom: Francia.

Under rulers like Charlemagne, Francia grew into a European superpower. By the 9th century, the western half became West Francia — the seed of modern France.

So yes, France is named after warriors — not wine, romance, or elegance. Today the name carries centuries of history, from battles and kings to revolutions and republics.
