Please excuse me sharing this curious post of a road sign, I have been interested by the selection of wine-related names for roads in a new housing development in nearby Kumeu ( I say Huapai in the video, but although this is off a road running into Huapai it is actually on the other side of the Kumeu River so counts as Kumeu). The roads appear to have been named to commemorate the area’s winemaking heritage, however the names chosen appear to just be random, wine-related terms, some quite obscure and many unrelated to the region they appear to be trying to commemorate.

The main road though the development is a case in point, accolage, a French term for tying vines down to their trellising wires. I’m not sure that in a region where viticulture was mainly driven by families who had come from Croatia that the use of French viticultural terms would have been that common. I would love to know more about how these road names were chosen!

  1. Reminds me on the day when you explained Aperture last year.

I also remember that I had to questions I wanted to ask that day and still haven’t found really satisfying answers.
