The hardest thing I had to adapt to (and I won't say I ever completely did) while attempting to integrate into my French in-law family, was everyone talking at once at the dinner table. Not only was it very difficult to understand the conversation at a time when my French was not strong, but in my culture we talk in turns and are taught not to interrupt. So, if I actually had anything to say, I could wait all night for a break in the conversation in order to insert a hesitant French phrase… But it got even worse! My husband explained this peculiarity of my upbringing which led to a sudden dead silence and all eyes trained on me every time I looked as though I might be about to make an utterance… Panic!!! 🤯
Bon Appétit!
@10:26 We Anglophones always, always, always fear "cutting the cheese". Right or wrong, it's always frrrrrtttt!
Delightful. Also the food…how delicious it all looks. Food plus conversation, it looks like earthly paradise. I so enjoy these visits, thank you.
Excellent and hilariously presented bravo. You failed to mention how Americans should adjust how they hold their fork in a fist and switch hands back and forth with the knife to eat.
I think this should be the process we have to go through in order to get a visa, followed by a multiple choice questionnaire on cheese and wine! 😂
Almost 3 years living in france now, our 6 yo received a birthday party invitation. I show up to just drop him off, and there's 6 parents/ neighbors sitting on the patio having beers. Do you want a beer? Sure. Well, after the beer, came the wine, then the charcuterie, more wine, 3 kinds of meat, 6 sides, more wine, then coffee, then the brandy, cognac, and rum. 5 freaking hours. I love it here.
Only a Frenchman could do this talk this well. Merci
Love the out take!…. excellent video…. but I have a few questions… what if you have a food allergy (shellfish for example) how do you communicate that… or if you've never eaten red meat or pork and find it gross to even think you could? American's, I fear, can be very picky about what they consume food-wise… with lots of substitutions etc. How do you let your hosts know?
This is the cultural integration information we require and BABY KITTY!!!!
How long does one need to live in France before you can purchase a beret? Do you need a permit?😊
Chrysanthemum save for all saint’s day
"Dear God, Leave before we fossilize" … 😂 You have such talent, Johnny!
With this episode, you have officially outdone yourself….bravo!
Nala is beautiful 😻. Thank you for an interesting video.
Two questions
1. What if I only eat fish?
2. After dinner, is it polite to ask to help with clean up? Dishes?
I’ve read other articles about this same topic, but not with such wisdom and, of course, humor. It was extremely helpful, and filled some of the gaps the others left empty. But there still may be some problems here. First, my husband and I were raised to be always on time, so this will take some getting used to. At least it gives us more time to look presentable. Second, depending on our neighbors, we are vegetarian and we don’t drink wine or any other form of alcohol, either, which may limit our dinner invitations. Lastly, our table manners and when and how to eat the food might be hit or miss at first, but we’ll just watch and learn and, hopefully, not cause an international incident with any mistakes we may commit. However, the one thing we’d have no trouble with would be the conversations. We are completely in sync with the French on what and what not too talk about, one of many things we love about the French. Thanks so much and it was nice your cat came to say hello!
This is a great video and I have had a bit of a giggle. Merci. I love reading all the comments too.
I needed your humor today! Great info presented humorously. You have a great way with words. Thank you!!
…sighing about the weather!!! Évidament!
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!
Awesome information, thanks. I need to aquire your charm and sense of humor. Perhaps once i move there I can learn how. 😊
So glad you are back!👍
I'm scared of this! Will they burn me at the village stake because I don't eat animal flesh and cows mother's milk?! 😂😵💫😳
oh so good.
Absolutely love your videos, highly entertaining and informative. I will be referring back to them when me move because I believe your actually telling it as it is. Ive ordered ur book for my husband (his French is by far better than mine). Look forward to your next video 👏🏻
Brilliant, Johnny!!😂😂😂
P.S. I’ve just ordered your book! Thanks!
I could have managed this in my younger years. But I don’t think I could last at a table for so long. Can you image if you found the hosts unlikable? lol That would be one looongg evening.
trop drôle – j'adoOre ! bien vu …. mais vous avez oublié de faire " le trou Normand " à moitié du repas pour faire passer la suite du menu ! – je découvre votre site et j'adoOre !
I loved this video; it's so well-written! I knew you were a writer when I first heard you speak months ago, while searching for videos on French houses. I wish you good luck with your new channel. I would love to see you not just in front of a green screen, but also walking through quaint villages, meeting (for example) the local pastry maker, and discussing how the pastries are made. People love watching videos about food and eating, so I think you should consider creating a series of videos about France's culinary delights, taking the viewer to new and undiscovered spots, going behind the scenes, and meeting the people who work in cafes, bakeries, and other food-related establishments. Watch https://www.youtube.com/paolofromtokyo. This guy gets millions of views! You could do something similar, and people would love it. (My humble opinion.)
Johnny, I really am not a fan of most cheese (or dairy)! Will they even allow me to move to France? Is that definite exile by the neighbors? How do I overcome this defect in my character? 🤔
Speechless at your brilliance, we are so extremely lucky to have you sharing it…
Great to see you back on YouTube Johnny
