In France wine was once considered such a central part of daily life that schoolchildren were served it with their meals. Until 1956 pupils could drink up to four glasses a day at school canteens. Authorities argued it taught moderation and cultural appreciation. By the late 20th century views had changed and in 1981 alcoholic drinks were officially banned from all French schools. This remains one of the most surprising chapters in the history of education and culture.

They let four year olds drink wine? Disgraceful in the UK you have to be at least 5 to be given alcohol at home and 16 to drink in a pub
