  1. theres a few reasons it might help a little with plaugue:

    acidity can be a sterilizer (I would think not against plague itself but it helps to fight only one infection at a time)
    vitamin C
    sugars
    hydration

    in the same way a plague doctors mask stuffed full of flowers didnt protect against miasma it did protect against direct exposure via coughs and sneezes and help with the smell situation

  4. its moments like this in history that are these people were a crucial part of humans staying alive. like how many people know or knew you need constant Vitamin C. they realized it was tasty and to the person who just became the lemonade seller the guy was just trying to make some money but it also improved people lives even if just within that place he lived.

  5. Y'know what? I would probably like lemonade more if it had orange juice in it. I've never been a huge fan of lemonade, but adding orange juice would help with the tartness, I think. I'm willing to give it a try

Grandfather use to go out to the woods for hours And come back with a basket of Staghorn Sumac And water from about 30 birch trees And with a few other roots made a drink that sat on the counter for 48hrs Then filtered it with a cheesecloth into a bucket Then into a few pitchers And chilled Grandmother would add crushed fruit (Oranges / Blueberries / Cherries ) Depending on what was at the store Or in season The results was It tasted like a light lemonade On its own However it was Super good for you

  7. Ward off the plague? Possibly! That recipe will make it more difficult for any bug to multiply fast. Vitamin C is kick ass body armor against illness.

  8. With the amount of vitamin C in it, no wonder they thought it helped fight the plague. It probably helped boost their immune systems!

  9. Mixing lemonade with orange juice sounds like such a good idea. Surprised I’d never heard of it.

  10. "Orangade" is mentioned in (the unabridged version of) Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo. Valentine DeVillefort's grandmother (I think, it's been 35+ years since I've read it,) drinks it.
    The novel is set during Napoleon's exile on Elba, which would put it at 1814 to 1815.

  11. it's not a chef named François but the title of the book means the real french cook. In this case françois is the old way to write français.
