The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 – 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 – 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 – 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 – 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 – 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
The story behind how I got the wines for this tasting is a bit crazy, but more on that later. Finally, I get to have a look at a misunderstood, but important part of the wine world: The South of France.
The south of France is complicated. On the one hand, the wine industry in Languedoc-Roussillon has suffered over the last decades. A focus on quantity over quality led to massive overproduction, which in turn led to large-scale vine-pulling schemes to reduce the output and stabilize wine prices.
On the other hand, there was a strong push towards quality by some pioneers going back 50 years at least. These pioneers worked hard to raise the profile of their home region, looking for the best terroirs of the South and using a mix of southern varieties, while also experimenting with more established grapes.
They managed to put certain areas from the south onto the map and transition the industry from just producing generic Vin de Pays to making AOC wines of high quality. A hotbed of this move towards quality in the south is the area around Aniane in the Herault, west of Montpellier. Some of the wineries have now achieved cult status, and their wines sell for very high prices. Getting to cult status was not easy, though …
Some of the struggles those producers had to go through were documented in the brilliant documentary Mondovino. The classic Quote “Le Vin est Mort” is from one of the protagonists of the film, Aimé Guibert, the owner of Mas de Daumas Gassac.
In the movie, he is depicted as a vigneron, battling the growing influence of the Mondavi family from the US, who, at the time, tried to establish a winery on wild land in the neighborhood of Mas de Daumas Gassac.
Aimé Guibert was one of the first to revolutionize the wine scene in the south of France, trying to create high-quality wine in Southern France. And we are going to taste some of them … and not only that, we are going to taste them aged …

I like them increasingly Konstantin. I was lucky to find a way underpriced Domaine de Trevaillon 2000 on a winelist recently and while drinking it, the restaurant crossed out the price on the wine list and doubled it! Fortunately ours was at the original price, and it was seriously good. I find there to be an interesting dichotomy – whilst the wines further North in France are struggling with excess alcohol and balance, many of the wines in the South have long mastered that or are not having to adjust too far from their core DNA. Interesting times we live in

Mas des Chimeres is nice and much more affordable, about 15 euro I paid. They say 91 pts but for me rather 89-90, still good value.
Gassac for me almost feels too close to Bordeaux as it ages. It is delicious, but in the end, I can go to Bordeaux for that.

mas jullien makes an igp with syrahgamay that is simply wonderfull . very low alcool compared to the average on the area … super super product for 20 euros . it's called le trescol don't know if you ever tried it

Thanks for a video on such a wonderful if overlooked wine region. Emphasis on quality in Languedoc-Rousillon in recent years by so many producers, often organic and/or biodynamic, has made it a source of many terrific affordable values in wine. What is nice now is that one does not have to spend $€$€ to get excellent wines in a price range comfortable for most wine drinkers.😋🍷
Roc D’anglade is very good too and definitely worth trying. Their whites age very well.
Would love to see you taste some Croatian wines and get your thoughts. Another wild card would be Canada.
As a wine newbie, I've discovered that I really enjoy Spanish wine – specifically red wines from Spain. Do you have any recommendations for red wines in the £30–60 (sterling) range that you would highly recommend? I'm a big Rioja fan, so if you can suggest something within that category, I'd be incredibly grateful.
Thanks for the nice review. I organised a tasting 20 years ago a tasting with red wines from Pic-Saint-Loup, an AOC of Languedoc, and I remember people were surprised by the quality of the wines. I very much liked the Château La Roque – Cupa Numismae (60% Syrah, 40% Mourvèdre). The wine is named after a golden coin that was found in the vineyards. Now the wine is called La Cupa and is made of 70% Syrah and 30% Mourvèdre.

Hi Konstantin I was watching Mind the Game a podcast between LeBron and Steve Nash talking about basketball while drinking wine. I always think about the wine they drink, you could make a video about it.
Could you pleas do a tasting from my favourite winemaker "Mitjavile family" with tertre roteboeuf, L'aurage, Le versant, roc de cambes and domaine de cambes. Very underrated estate in Bordeaux rightbank. And the wines are in all different price points!

Are the wines at temperature ? The question seems silly but the 3 first white wines didn’t look cold, nor the bottle or the glass once served 🤔 that would loudly affect the tasting
