“I followed the news on the TV yesterday evening and to be honest I was really stressed by the possibility of having these 200% tariffs. Then with 20 (%) it’s bad news, like you said, it can be worse and we have to take it, we have to deal with it and we’ll find solutions. It’s not good news but we’re not alone in the boat and there is other people like us who will be impacted by the tariffs so we’ll see what will happen now.”

“Concretely, it’s only on the price that we can maybe do an effort. It’s not an easy thing to do, particularly on this year because in Chablis, we have lost, last year, a lot of our crop. The loss for our domain is 50% so you can imagine that, in this context, adding problematic on sales when you already have problems on production is complicated.”

“We are not in school. It’s just that if you take a bad thing if you answer too quickly with the same violence, it’s not constructive so we have to discuss. There is a way to find and make everything go well for everyone… not as bad.”

“Again, like the vineyard, last year, we were certain to do a good harvest and finally, 1st of May we had hail and we have lost 50% of our crop and that was unpredictable. We know unpredictability but, on certain things like frost damage, we can fight against, on tariffs, we can’t, so we just follow the rules.”

STORYLINE:
It’s not 200% but it’s still bad news to swallow for Vincent Dampt, owner of a wine domain of the same name in the Chablis region of France.
“I was really stressed with the possibility of having this 200% tariff,” Dampt told the Associated Press. “20% is bad news but it could be worse. It’s not good news but we’re not alone in this boat.”
US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new 20% tariff on the European Union drew a sharp rebuke from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who said it was a “major blow to the world economy.”
Von der Leyen held off, however, from announcing new retaliatory measures and underlined that the EU was ready to negotiate with the U.S.
Dampt suggested he preferred a negotiated outcome – a full on trade war is bad for business, he said.
“We’re not at school,” Dampt said. “If you answer too quickly with the same violence, it’s not constructive.”
A third generation winemaker, he ships about 30% of his production to the US – roughly 25,000 bottles. A drop in sales there would severely impact his business.
