The Second World War began on 1 September 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. The German invasion of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands started on 10 May 1940 and became known as the Battle of France. On 8 June, around 9 p.m., the first tanks of the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich arrived in Tulle from three different directions, catching the Resistance fighters off guard. The Maquis, unprepared for such a formidable force, immediately retreated to the surrounding hills without engaging in further combat. The SS established their initial command post in the Souilhac district near the weapons factory, later relocating to the Hotel Moderne the following day. Throughout the night, SS patrols secured the town and established a perimeter around it.
At dawn on 9 June 1944, the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich initiated a brutal reprisal against the civilian population of Tulle. Under the pretense of identity checks, more than 3,000 men aged between 16 and 60 were apprehended, often from their homes, and assembled in Souilhac Square, facing the Tulle Weapons Factory. The detainees were then divided into columns, with selections made by SS officers, notably Walter Schmald of the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police. By late afternoon, 120 men had been marked for execution. Following urgent appeals from local authorities, 21 individuals were spared, reducing the number of condemned to 99. These men, their hands bound, were then led in groups of ten to predetermined execution sites throughout the town. Nooses had been prepared on balconies, lampposts, and trees, creating a macabre scene that stretched across several hundred meters.

The war was against the millions of germans that died. The ones that won the war, make up the news. Small hats lied.
Mercedes,BMW,Krups,and more German companies had slave labor inside their factories. When these factories were bombed in WW2 ,allied POW's perished.

The French were more brutal than any Waffen SS Division although they did excel in cowardice. Having declared war on Germany they left their far braver British allies to their fate in 1940 by almost immediately surrendering. They then spent most of the war collaborating until the allies arrived when they found enough courage to turn on their own women who were stripped, beaten and tortured for working as maids or secretaries for the Germans. In contrast to Yugoslav or Russian partisans, their resistance fighters never showed much appetite for fighting, prefering to hide their weapons and pose as civilians unless the odds made it perfectly safe. Their treatment of surrendering Germans was beyond criminal. It can be argued that a guerilla army is unable to hold large numbers of prisoners so I quite accept that they had no choice but to execute them, despite the fact that by 1944 many were unenthusiastic conscripts. All parties to this foul war are equally guilty here. However there can be no excuse for the torture and mutilation of the Tulle garrison soldiers or burning prisoners alive. In contrast those executed by Germany were either shot or hung. In massacring the entire village where the charred bodies of their comrades were found, the Germans surrendered any moral high ground and for this and other atrocities many paid quite rightly with their lives. None of the French sadists were punished for the outrages to civilized norms they were responsible for. History is meant to be a cold, impartial arbiter of truth, not this kind of sensationalised hysteria. Try harder.

Tulle was a complicated sequence of events ..under the warped standards of the Nazi Occupation the events in Tulle would be considered a legitimate reprisal action .The SS officers involved would think they did nothing wrong

I can't help but notice, but in nearly all the renditions of the activities of the S. S., especially in the East, no mention is ever made of the German Polezie, reservist units, that worked as part of/in conjunction with the Einsatzgruppen, conducting extermination operations in the East. These were mentioned extensively, in the book, "Hitler's willing executioners". Almost none of these, were ever held to account for their crimes. Also, the so-called, French Resistance, were composed of different factions, like the Communists, with differing political aims. Murdering captured German prisoners, was commonplace, regardless of their branch of service, or rank. It wasn't unknown for Allied service personnel, to wear national flag identification, on their uniforms, in areas known to be under Resistance observation, to avoid being shot, out of hand!
