Let’s discuss, taste and see what’s so special about Chateau Montelena, the wine that shocked the world by receiving highest score (for white wines) in the legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris. However, instead of just tasting the legendary Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, I will be also tasting Chateau Montelena The Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, which is also a world-class wine.

Yes I wanna try the Cabernet Sauvignon and I like the California Chardonnays for roast chicken pairings because they are as not as austere as the burgundy Chardonnays
Let me know in the comments if you've ever tasted Chateau Montelena wines and what you think of them! 🍷
No more Cabernet for me, especially Cali.
My wife and I really enjoy the Zinfandel from CM. 😊
I have had both of these, the 19 chard and a 2004 estate cab. Great wines. Had the 2004 cab at Christmas 2023, it was awesome. I broke the cork up when opening it, I definitely recommend using a Durand for the older Montelena corks. I did not have one at the time but I do now. I have 2 2008 bottles of the cab as well as a 19 and a 21 of the chard I'm looking forward to enjoying.
❤thanks for sharing
Had the 1987 Chateau Montelena cab three weeks ago. Absolutely spectacular.
Wonderful as usual
As a US based wine lover I am so sick of hearing about "the judgement of Paris". Let's be frank: France had gotten lazy in their wine making. Their fame went to their heads and they relied on it rather than making the best wine they could. Yes, this judging woke people up to California wine but it also gave a much needed kick in the pants to the French wine makers. If you ask me, California wines (in general) are showing the same laziness that France had and the world is starting to step up. It wont be long before California will have to learn that alcoholic, tannic monsters are old, tired and the wave of the past – not the future.
I’ve been buying the Estate Cabernet on the futures program since the 2015 vintage as well as acquiring older wines from the auction market. Recently enjoyed a 2005 which was outstanding. It’s also fun to mix in the Napa Valley bottling while waiting for the estate to age. I enjoy the Chardonnay, but prefer the Sonoma offerings from Peter Michael over Montelena. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and I enjoy your videos!
Very interesting – thank you. This wine cost too much for me (😢). But Californian wine can be great and, also, French wine can be great….one doesn't cancel the other! And both can be modern and traditional at the same time. Thanks again.
My wine mentor, Clifton Hieronymus Jr., loved Ch. Montelena so much he swore it was a Napa First Growth. I’ll have to agree. He believed Diamond Creek was another.
I really Love your video Agnese❤❤❤
About nine years ago I saw a 1982 Montelena Estate for the ridiculous price of $115 so I snatched it. I later served it blind to my friends, all Old World wine connoisseurs – everyone went for a Left Bank Bordeaux from around 1996. So… yes. It was great, elegant, complex and rather young for its age.
Love the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay!! It’s pricey but one of my favorites
Next time you’re in that part of Napa definitely check out Vincent Arroyo! Family owned and all dry-farmed vineyards. Their Cabernets and Petite Sirah are lovely!
I had the 2019 Château Montelena Chardonnay about a year ago and loved it! Will eventually try their Cabernet Sauvignon. Side note – I didn't know their Judgement of Paris winning wine wasn't made from estate fruit! 🤯
That’s quite expensive for me to even think about.. 250 ish for both bottles…. I do enjoy your vids Agnese..
Always a pleasure to see New World wines featured, something I'm not particular privy of.
Hey, isn't this one of those overextracted Napa Cabs that does not pair well with food that Aldo Vacca warned you about? As much as I love Napa CS, the price has led me to seek more affordable alternatives from other regions. Paso Robles, Chile, Argentina, etc.
Interesting, I've only bought the Cab!
Well Sideways is in a class of its own, but Bottle Shock is an amazing film and story.
i started drinking Ch montelena, the regular bottling cabernet sauvignon back in 1993. At the time i thought i was a good buy for $25. I had my share during these heady days, so i must have drank 2 cases. But now it $142…. Yikes!
Then, during those days in the 90's (i get nostalgic thinking about them) i had an opportunity to try the estate and it was i thought a great deal for 1998 estate for $75. It was a lovely wine and it changed and evolved in my cellar, and the last bt I had was a few years ago before the pandemic. It was absolutely stunning like a first growth bordeaux, but with a sweetish Napa finish, which i love in Napa wines. Not to sweet, balanced and very fresh with the fruit still present.
The bt was so good that i don't want to drink the last bt in my cellar any more, instead waiting for its 30th Birthday. Who says that Napa Cabs don't age! You just have to have good a storage facility.
If you are around perhaps i will be persuaded to pull the cork…..
I’ve only ever gotten to try the 2020 Chardonnay, but I was really impressed. I thought it was very rich and had the perfect balance between butter and oak. Tasting a piece of wine history is so exciting!
Never tasted it. But the movie ''Bpttle Shock'' is great
I’m tempted by the Cabernet…but it would be more than I’ve ever spent on a bottle! Will let you know….
I had the Chardonnay once. I found it to be too acidic. If I want that much acidity in wine I would rather choose another wine (grape). Never had the Cabernet.
