There were so many surprises when I moved to France. Many of them were actually pleasant surpises and I couldn’t be happier about them. There are so many amazing aspects of living in France and in this video, I’m telling you about five of them. Some have to do with French culture/French way of life, the country itself, and French people.

Salut! I’m Diane, an American who has lived in France since 2012 and the creator of the blog/YT channel Oui In France. My channel’s focus is “Everyday French life and beyond.” I make videos on French culture topics, France vs. US culture comparisons, with a sprinkling of food, travel, and language topics and give you my thoughts about what it’s like living in France as an American in the Loire Valley. Thanks for being here and if you enjoy this sort of thing, please share with friends and subscribe!

  1. The enormous crush of tourists generally, and the appalling political situation in the US specifically, will almost certainly change French attitudes towards Americans this year, and in to the future. I can only hope that they retain some measure of good will towards us going forward.

  2. Veterinarians can remove your ownership if they think you are a threat to your pet and like pharmacist we have "vétérinaires de garde" available 24/24h 7/7days.
It's not just wine you can buy directly from the productors, you can find indications on the road for cheese, vegetables, flowers, etc.
Parisians are usually THE rude people, nobody like them, but they don't represent the people from France.
In the south there are many elderly with trust issues, but most of the time they are polite and engaging while in the north we always love to speak with strangers.
What is true about french people thought, is that we love to complain about anything 😓.

  3. Salut Diane,
I am French living in the US. Truly, all the points you brought up apply to all cultures. French, American, Mexican: RESPECT! That's all. Thank you

  4. I visited France, Paris and most people were not friendly or downright rude, including a waiter in a moderate restaurant that put wine on the bill that we never ordered nor got!
I asked him to remove the wine from the bill and then asked, in French whether we spoke French. I said no and he said ‘quel domage’.
I knew enough French to know he said ‘what a shame’ so I said, in English, yes, it’s a shame but take the wine off the bill!
And there were wine French tourists in the Munich area at a tourist site and were very rude! Acted like they owned the place! Almost caused a fight with us and we never forgot that!

  5. I’m french, thank you for your gentle opinion. We love US citizens, we remenber you help us against nazis in 1944 ! 😊
But we hates Trump ! 😢

  6. Ohh, I feel the vet care comment very deeply as well, as I'm sure you know. My cat Benny had a stroke while we were in France one summer and with his treatment he pretty much fully recovered. His last couple years he had good quality of life because of the long-term treatment they prescribed (and which was really affordable – I don't know how much it would have cost in the U.S. but it could easily have been "hors de prix").

On an unrelated note, I'm loving these glasses on you!
