I always found it fascinating that the instant you cross the border from the Northeastern United States into Canada, many people start speaking French as their first language and many of them don’t speak English. And less than a 2-hour drive from the United States is the last major city in North America where over 90% of residents speak only French as their first language, which believe it or not is actually a greater percentage than speak French in Paris.
But people from France have historically looked down on Quebec French as nonstandard and rustic, but having learned my own very basic French more from West Africans, Haitians, Cajuns, and Canadians than French people, I was perfectly okay coming to Quebec City to practice my French, even if people did think it was kind of strange that this random American tourist sounded like a rural Quebecois lumberjack.

When folks were laughing, it was because you used exactly the right slang for the context, which is really impressive, but messed up the pronunciation, super cute 🙂 e.g. instead of [fak] «faque» 'so', [fɔk ~ fʌk] «phoque» 'seal' ~ «f*ck»

To my surprise here is this video! You’ve got a lot of the expressions down perfectly “fait frette” instead of “il fait froid”, “des états” instead of “des états-unis”, “virer en brosse” , “c’est bon en caliss” “tabarnouche”, “tu me niaise”, these at all words we use on the daily that European French barely understand!

J’ai apris le français en Colombie Brittanique quad j’étais jeune en une école totallement Francophone, et tout me proffesseurs venait de Québec, alors Mon Français est pas pire. Quand j’ai déménagé à l’Alberta j’étais encore en immersion française et je peut t’assuré que ton français est bien meilleure que les étudiants non-francophone en Canada. Bravo! I heard a guy explain it this way once. American English and Canadian French are actually closer or more faithful to the older forms because of the isolation from development in Europe. So, in a way, Canadian French and American English are the older or more "original" forms.
