Scientists Reveal Shocking Genetic Origins of French People
When people imagine France, they often think of it as a cohesive and distinct culture, with its characteristic language, cuisine, and traditions. However, recent advances in genetic research paint a very different picture. France’s population is not homogenous, nor has it ever been. Instead, the French genetic identity is the product of thousands of years of human migration, conquest, trade, and settlement. Every region of France tells a different story, holding onto distinct genetic patterns that reflect ancient movements of people across the continent.
Situated at the heart of Europe, France has long served as a crossroads for various migrating populations. Waves of people came from Central Europe, the Mediterranean, and beyond, bringing new cultural and genetic influences. These waves were not always peaceful—some groups arrived through conquest, while others came seeking better opportunities or fleeing environmental hardships. But over time, each migration left a genetic footprint, enriching the diversity we see in modern France. Some regions, like **Brittany**, carry strong ties to the **Celtic world**, while others, like **Corsica**, maintain deep historical connections to **Italy**. Similarly, the people of **Gascony** in the southwest share unique genetic markers with the **Basques** of northern Spain, making them distinct from other French populations.

Nothing about France is shocking.
THE PEOPLE FROM SOUTHERN FRANCE HAVE A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF IBERIAN DNA WHICH IS NOT SURPRISING BECAUSE SOUTHERN FRANCE IS ON THE BORDERS WITH SPAIN. THE PEOPLE OF NORHERN FRANCE IS GENETICALLY, CLOSE TO THE PEOPLE FROM THE UK BECAUSE NORTHERN FRANCE IS VERY NEAR TO THE UK. THE PEOPLE FROM THE PART OF FRANCE WHICH IS ON THE BORDERS WITH GERMANY, HAVE GERMANIC DNA. IT'S THE SAME WITH ALL LARGE COUNTRIES, ALL OVER THE WORLD. PEOPLE FROM ONE COUNTRY, SEEM TO BE GENETICALLY RELATED TO THE PEOPLE FROM THEIR NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES. THIS IS DUE TO PEOPLE CROSSING THE BORDERS INTO THEIR COUNTRY, FROM THEIR NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES AND MIXING WITH THE LOCAL POPULATION.
❤France, a great nation that deserves our admiration and Love
for its brilliant culture.
Huge immigration of Italians in late 19th century up to WWI. Partly factory work, and deteriorating terms of trade impoverishing Italian agriculture.
As a French person, I have often been surprised by the importance that genetic origin takes in the countries of northern Europe in the representation of their identity whereas French identity is a cultural thing
Alsace and Loraine was robbed from Germany
The title is surprising. There is nothing shocking. Just facts given the location of France. Overall excellent piece . Kudos !
If you like "vague", you'll like this. No mention of mDNA or haplogroup, no evidence presented whatsoever. Just a generic North American voiceover and lots of painted artwork with no credit given to the artists. Safe for the science-phobic.
breton is not a dialect. It is a separate language.
Faites faire des tests ADN et vous saurez d'ou les français viennent .. Francs , Burgondes et pour moi Irlandais-bretons et pays de Galles .
