A Day in the Life | Living in Cannes | French Onion Soup Recipe + Storm Update

Join me for a cosy day in Cannes as a British expat on the beautiful French Riviera! Today, school is cancelled for Seth & Nancy due to a red alert for extreme weather, but when the storm holds off, Nancy and I decide to brave it and stroll into the city for a bit of browsing. Nancy treats herself to a delicious croque monsieur and a massive slice of chocolate cake from our local boulangerie – French food at its finest!

While we’re out, I get inspired by a French onion soup I had in Paris and pick up fresh tradition baguettes for an afternoon of cooking. After a quick dash to the supermarket, I also find a gorgeous new plant for our patio and a fondue set I’ve been eyeing for ages!

Back at home, I show you how to make the most delicious French onion soup with a relaxing cook-along segment. Ryan arrives home from work, thrilled that I’ve made one of his favourites! Will the soup pass the taste test? Watch to find out!

This hearty, family-friendly meal is perfect for autumn and I even share a keto-friendly option by skipping the bread.

Don’t forget to like and subscribe for more expat life content, family adventures, and mouth-watering French recipes!

  1. First he takes you shopping for flower pots then he totally appreciates your cooking. Perfect man! Caramelize the onions a bit more, it takes awhile. Fun show!!!

  2. I love your videos, and I love French onion soup! You've inspired me to make a batch of ut right now!

  3. I enjoyed watching your Sunday post. You might want to try easy cheese Fondues 🫕🧀 (gruyere cheese & Swiss cheese). I wrote more & it has vanished again. It is honestly disappointing because I really try to communicate new stuff. I'm not giving up. Stay warm. Stay dry. Stay happy. Seth does have great hair. I remember how beautiful you looked when you both went to Paris and had french onion soup. This is very disjointed and unusual but maybe it'll post. I hope so❤

  4. I make my French onion soup outside on the bbq burner, it takes all day to caramelize the onions, way too stinky for our house, I literally can’t stir the onions without the steam getting in my hair and on my clothes. I love the soup but hate making it so I make so much I freeze it for the rest of the winter.

  5. I loved the mother/daughter braving it to go out and enjoy a nice walk. Ryan is really enjoying the French onion soup treat.

  6. Bonjour bonsoir hello my lovely Fern it’s been sooo long like you I’ve been making changes keeping the fitness levels up loving the vege garden at present and I too love love hydrangeas 😍👌That onion soup is on my menu this week Ryan in blissful gastronomic heaven my wife sure can cook traditional baguette perfetto 🌟Seth and Nancy growing into lovely well mannered teenagers Nancy knows what her palate likes that chocolate delight delish another fabulous visit sorry I’ve been absent I’m enjoying the vlog catchup and now it’s time for you and Ryan to enjoy your life always inspires my life enchante my loves💖💖😘😘👌🌟

  7. Fern, I found one of my comments in a reply slot after you replied to " @ sweet 2 savvy 225'' ,a couple. You mentioned that it was a compliment coming from them. I don't understand why it goes to replies instead of post as a comment? So I did discover one of them it's perhaps probable that another missed comment got tucked away in a reply zone. Oftentimes I can say that I research specifically part of the content of my comment. That makes it not as instant. So then technically maybe it times out to be in the slot of a reply. I'm thinking that must be why. Not not meaning to buzz your head but these are the kinds of things that I like to understand. Nitpicky you could say.!

  8. I love seeing all of you so happy in your new home! Would you ever have imagined selling the villa and landing in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cannes? Such a metropolitan family.

  9. The onion soup looked amazing. May I just say, you never wash mushrooms. You are only to brush off the dirt. The water will act as a sponge to the shroom and affects the taste.

  10. Haha I love the onion glasses! Soup looks A1. So Fern, I feel like you're tantalizing us with the snippets of your new place in thhe background. I'd love to see where your whole kitchen is at now and whats new all over your place. 😊

  11. Love this video! Onion Soup is also my favourite, had it every evening for supper when I was in Paris! Nancy is just too adorable!

  12. The plant you bought is bruyère in French .Difficult to pronounce for English speakers with the Rs 😜It’s very common in cemeteries at this time of the year for Toussaint (All Saints) when people clean their tombs . The usual flowers put in cemeteries are chrysanthemums but bruyères last longer !! You should have a look around the 1st of November . The cemeteries are full of fresh flowers .
Your onion soup looks yummy 👍you should also buy a raclette set . Sure your family would love it as well !!

  13. Glad I inspired you with my meagre tin of “Baxter’s!” 🤪 Have to say yours was a slightly different experience!! Wow! That looked fantastic!! 👌🏾😘 Chefs Kiss!! 👏🏼👏🏼glad to see Ryes gratitude too bless him .. 🤣 “can’t decide what meat it is 🤔”.. it’s “Onion”dear 🤣🤣❤️💙xx

  14. Watch A Million Women on the Mall in Washington DC‼️😀👭👭👭👭👭👭👭👭👭👭👭👫👫❤️

  15. Fern, you and Ryan are soooo darling together!! I just love you and your family…I literally watch your videos with a smile on my face through every video, every time! Such a wonderful and beautiful family you two have created. And, your soup looked out of this world! Yum!!

  16. Beautiful couple so down to earth lov you guys always cherish each other my man is my best person in the world xx🐩🐩🥰

  17. Bonjour Fern and family, I'm a long time subscriber but this is my first comment. Love your videos! I'm French Canadian (born a Jeannette and married a Scotsman…MacMillan) When we went to Paris, I tried escargot for the first time at a restaurant called "Les Noces de Jeannette", (my family name) I'm not kidding you! They were so good that when we got home to Canada, I bought snail plates and made them myself…but you made your own French onion soup! Love your family too! Cheers and Bonsoir from Canada!

  18. I grew up eating fondue with meat (filet) and the pot had oil and butter in it – amazing. You can also do broth. But the oil and butter combo is incredible.

  19. Oh,boy! I think I gained a few pounds watching this video! Nice to see the family settling into their new nest! ✨😋✨

  20. I have never thought of adding mushrooms to French Onion Soup but they will go into my next batch. Honestly Fern, that looked restaurant quality and Ryan's appreciation of it was so cute.

  21. Fern, I have watched you for a very long time and today you look like Grace Kelly. Gorgeous. I think it is the way you have your hair back from your face or hair color. I love that I can be with you in one of my favorite places in the world.
