South Africa ranks 8th among wine producing countries in the world market.
The Cape’s vineyards are concentrated in a relatively small area, but the diversity of grape varieties allows them to produce a wide variety of wines.
South Africa is said to be one of the “new world” wine producers, but in fact the wine industry is far from “new”.

  1. I drink wine from South Africa and I think that there is a drought there and people rationalize the water……

  2. Correction: Jan van Riebeeck did not colonize the Cape for the Dutch. He had the rank of commander in the DEIC with the express order to establish a refreshment station at the Cape for passing ships. His aim or mission was not political, but to facilitate the trade initiatives.Governor Simon van der Stel who followed van Riebeeck a few years later was a political representative of the Dutch, and thus the first hint of colonialisation,if his mission could be interpreted as such, but there were no grand thoughts of colonialisation as a first order objective…..the focus was on the support of the ships on the trade route to the East.
