For our wine tasting today Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director, David Allen MW tastes a simple, but great-value example of a classic Loire Valley Chenin Blanc from the Saumur appellation. The wine concerned is Chateau Montgueret’s Saumur Blanc 2021.

Château de Montguéret is located in the heart of Haut-Layon, in the Angers-Cholet-Saumur triangle. Sitting principally on clay shale soils, the estate has over 120 hectares of vines. The chateau is located in Nueil-sur-Layon and the vines spread over four communes in the southern Saumurois region, producing AOC wines from Saumur, Anjou and the Coteaux de Layon. Cremant de Loire sparkling wines are also produced,

The property comprises old cellars flanked by turrets, a nineteenth century manor house and its annexes, The Chateau was built around 1860 on a park which already contained century-old cedars and magnolias, and facing the Layon Valley. The style of the house is eye-catching, combining Saumur tuffeau stone, Angevine slate and Sèvres brick.

Winemaking at Chateau Montgueret is done sustainably according to the standards laid down by the “TERRA VITIS” organization.

hello there today I wanted to take a look at our white samur so we have a wine here made from shanan Blanc this is Shadow deong Samuel Blanc 2021 so the the shadow here is is quite a large estate I’ve seen uh 120 or 130 hectares quoted as the The Vineyard size possibly it’s one of these things where the total estate is 130 hectares and there 20 hectares planted but I’m I’m not sure of that anyway substantial size estate and it’s described as sitting at the the heart of the out Leon region I’ve also seen it described as being in the midst of the aner chol somu triangle so take a pick as to how you want to Define that the estate sits in the Noel seon commune and its Vineyards cover four different communes in the southern samur region the wines they make are predominantly AOC win so the these include where they they make red white and sparkling wines onu where they can make Reds they can make roses and eat cabinet dongju C Deon where they make sweet wines and they also make sparkling wines under the the cron deir designation as well so quite a diverse range the shadow itself was built in 1860 and it was built in the site of a park where there were already Century old sellers so it’s a historic center for the production of wines the estate is very picturesque and is described as a combination of brick toffo and slate so it’s a quite particular looking building The Vineyards are farmed sustainably according to the guidelines of a group called terius given the fact that this is shanan Blanc I would imagine the fruit is probably handpicked shannan is is not a uh a variety that takes particularly well to machine harvesting but it’s not impossible I have no details whatsoever about the wine making there is a suggestion that the the wine may receive a little cool prefermentation soak but I have nothing more than that I should imagine it’s temperature controlled in stainless steel tanks certainly they’ll block malolactic conversion from happening just to preserve the freshness of the wine so yeah I’m I’m assuming a cool temperature fermentation in stainless steel given the Wine’s price point which is not particularly High I’m not expecting there to be any Oak aging whatsoever so let’s have a look at the wine shall we the color is a vibrant mid yellow perhaps with a slight greenish touch but not substantially so the alcohol is at 12% but there are still some tears mixing themselves to the glass as I swirl it they’re not substantial but they are certainly there so let’s see what we make of the aroma shall we that’s a very typically shenan note there’s a slight minerality to it but beyond that there’s a a waxiness there are notes of of various sort of grapefruit lemon Citrus notes there there’s a sort of an appiness perhaps a bit of pear yes as I say these sort of waxy slightly lanolin notes are overlaying the fruits there so let’s have a taste shall we on the palette that’s dry it’s rounded it’s got a clean freshness to it and that’s some nice sharp almost slightly tart acidity the acidity is not got the roundedness that you get if if the wine had undergone malolactic conversion and you’re seeing this quite sort of fresh maybe slightly sappy green apple green GRE peir fruit with a little bit of sort of lemony note behind that giving a zippy freshness to the back palette there’s a texture to the wine it’s I guess it’s midweight and a roundness but it doesn’t seem to be around this that’s particularly promoted by laziness there isn’t a sort a creamy note to it the alcohol only being 12% the wine actually still has some quite good body so there’s some quite nice intensity of fruit there for what is as I say an entry level wine I don’t have a a a score for this so we don’t have any critics reviews for it but actually given its price point I I think that’s a perfectly nice wine that would happily mature in bottle for a year or two there’s no need to mature it it’s it’s lovely and fresh now I would certainly think that that’s worth something like about 88 points or something like that it’s a nicely drinkable fresh wine with some good persistence in on the palette enough richness to stop it seeming particularly tart so thank you very much for joining us I do hope you’ve enjoyed the tasting if you have do please press the like button below if you want to watch more of these tastings the 1. Chenin never seems to attract the attention of the wine public, me included. I suppose the waxy thing is the dealbreaker?

  2. Of all the Chenin blancs in Saumur, he chooses this one???!!! Try any Chenin from Lambert or Duveau or, my goodness, Guiberteau or Yvonne!! These are world-class wines. This one in the video, not so much……
