this week i did a lot of research and identified 10 of the very best values in bordeaux for 30 or less these are all extraordinary wines for the price point and screaming buys so let’s get started the first top bordeaux for thirty dollars or less is chateau oatbrison specifically i’m talking about the 2019 version but this one offers compelling value every year this is a right bank bordeaux from saint emilion it’s located fairly close to monbusque there’s 18 hectares of vineyards with vines that average about 30 years old this producer was certified organic in 2010 and also uses some biodynamic farming techniques this is a wine that can be enjoyed young with a healthy decant but it definitely improves and benefits from four to five years of bottle age and you can keep it for up to two decades this wine is full bodied opulent and structured for wine that’s only thirty dollars it’s received significant critical acclaim and the 2020 looks to be even better so be sure to keep an eye out for that one as well the next top bordeaux for thirty dollars or less is the 2019 chateau mont laundry chateau montlandry is located in the cote d’ion the cote de castillon is part of the cote de bordeaux aoc the code de bordeaux aoc consists of a small group of appalachians on the right bank of bordeaux the terroir from mount laundry is quite similar to some of the better vineyards in saint emilion this producer has 12 hectares of vineyards they just added cabernet sauvignon recently and so 2013 is the first vintage to include that this one comes in at 14 abv this is an excellent choice year after year that offers incredible quality for this price point the 2019 vintage consists of 75 merlot 20 cabernet franc and 5 cabernet sauvignon this wine is vibrant and expressive with tremendous purity of fruit and silky tannins this wine is showing well already despite its youth but will drink incredibly well from 2025 to 2035 or so this is another one that did extremely well with critics the next top bordeaux for 30 or less comes in at only 26.99 specifically i’m talking about chateau dalam from the 2019 vintage chateaudalam is a historic property that dates all the way back to 1610. this is a bordeaux blend from franzak that consists of 90 merlot and 10 cabernet franc they used to use cabernet sauvignon in the blend but they recently took the cabernet sauvignon out and added more merlot to the blend and so now it’s 90 merlot this producer has 33 hectares of vineyards with vines that average an impressive 45 years of age this one really does improve quite a bit with two more years of bottle age so it’s probably best to leave it alone for a couple years but then you can enjoy it for another decade after that this is just another screaming by an incredible value from bordeaux and another one that’s highly regarded by critics you just can’t go wrong with this wine the next top bordeaux for thirty dollars or less is the chateau ant bergie from pesach leonion this producer has 42 hectares of vineyards with vines that average 30 years of age this producer was certified organic in 2017 and also uses biodynamic farming techniques this is a bordeaux blend that consists of 42 percent cabernet sauvignon 40 merlot 12 percent cabernet franc and six percent petite verdeaux this one needs a couple more years of bottle age but it should be ready to go in 2024 it comes in at 13 and a half percent abv this is another one that offers compelling value year in and year out so it’s definitely one you can buy with confidence if i did have one criticism of this producer it’s that they’re a bit heavy-handed with the new oak but if you don’t mind that this one is an exceptional buy for the price the next top wine for thirty dollars or less comes from chateau smith a la fit which is also located in pesach leonyon specifically i’m talking about the chateau smitholt lafitte les petit the 2020 futures sell for 29.99 this wine is a blend of 60 cabernet sauvignon and 40 merlot this wine is made in a similar style to the top wine but it is more approachable with sweet ripe fruit and silky tannins by the way should you find yourself visiting bordeaux you definitely want to check out the spa and hotel that’s located right on the property it’s called la source de caudali i stayed there a few years ago they have a tremendous restaurant and it makes it super easy to visit smithout lafitte if you’re interested in wine recommendations wine collecting strategies and learning more about wine please do subscribe to my channel i’ve been collecting wine for more than 15 years and also have a level 4 diploma from the wset so i have both formal certification as well as substantial practical knowledge from the school of hard knocks the next top bordeaux for 30 or less also comes from passock leonyon this is a new producer that’s only been around for 20 years or so but is making excellent quality wines specifically i’m talking about the chateau chloe marsalet which sells for 29.99 this producer uses organic and sustainable farming practices and has 13 hectares of vineyards this wine is a blend that consists of 50 merlot 49 cabernet sauvignon and one percent cabernet franc this wine is already approachable but will easily age another 15 years or so this wine offers compelling value for this price point and is an absolute no-brainer that’s also received critical acclaim chateau lebagorse from argo is the next top bordeaux for 30 or less and i found the 2020 futures selling for 29.97 this producer has 53 hectares of vineyards in margaux the vines average an impressive 50 years of age although they do have some vines that are as old as 100 years old this blend consists of 50 cabernet sauvignon 45 merlot three percent cabernet franc and two percent petite verdeaux this is an impressive wine but it does reward some cellaring i’ve found that it’s best with about five to seven years of bottle age and it will certainly cruise in the cellar for up to two decades this is another wine that’s received significant critical acclaim especially at this price point if you have no patience you can enjoy it while it’s young but be sure to give it plenty of air the next top bordeaux for 30 or less comes from the franzak aoc which is on bordeaux’s right bank specifically i’m talking about the 2019 chateau fontanille which i found for only 27.99 this winery is owned by famous winemaker michelle rolland and his brother danny they have 11 hectares of vineyards with vines that average about 45 years of age the vineyards are ideally situated in probably some of the best terroir in franza they’re at the highest elevation and they face south and the soils are a mix of clay and limestone this wine is 100 mere low and does receive significant critical acclaim 2019 is probably the best vintage that they’ve ever produced but it’s certainly one that offers compelling quality year in and year out this wine is fruit forward and approachable now but it will definitely gain complexity with some bottle age and easily last 10 to 15 years or so so this is another one that you definitely want to keep an eye out for the next top line for 30 or less comes from a fairly new producer that had his first vintage in just 2016. this producer is located in a satellite appellation of saint emilion that’s called montana saint emilion specifically i’m talking about chateau chloe dubois impressively this wine is made by the team that makes the wine for chateau anjalus so it’s definitely a very very well made wine this producer is also located in an impressive neighborhood as its neighbors include floor cardinal and troplong mondo this producer has 30 hectares of vines that average 35 years of age but they do have some vines as old as 60 to 70 years old the vineyards are planted to 66 merlot 24 cabernet franc and 10 cabernet sauvignon the blend is consistent with the plantings it’s dominant in merlot but there is also some cabernet franc and some cabernet sauvignon this is one that you can enjoy young but will also easily age 10 to 15 years or so the next bordeaux for 30 or less comes from the same wine making team as the chateau pavi wines specifically i’m talking about the 2019 khloe linnell clovelanel is located in the cote d’acastion this producer has eight and a half hectares of vines that average an impressive 45 years of age this wine is 80 merlot and the remaining 20 percent is an equal blend of cabernet franc in cabernet sauvignon this is another wine that does extremely well with critics this is an opulent full-bodied wine with sweet ripe fruit that also shows some intriguing minerality that i really enjoy this wine will improve with four to six years of bottle age and it should last 20 years or so with no difficulties if you’re looking for more high quality bordeaux recommendations for less than fifty dollars be sure to check out my video of top ten bordeaux for forty dollars which i have linked above

As usual, thank you so much for the fantastic content, best regards from Brazil.
John, I appreciate all the research an intricate details that went into making this video. I’m not well-versed with Bordeaux wines, but I am learning a heck of a lot from you. Thank you so much for these wine recommendations. Not only they are delicious but they offer compelling value. Cheers!
While many wine influencers and enthusiasts can recommend a good Bordeaux, I trust only a few — and at the top of that list is you. Take for example, this video — obviously a product of excellent research, exceptional knowledge, and extraordinary experience in the world wine. So these are recommendations I know I can and should take seriously. This is such a timely video because I’ve been recently beefing up my little Bordeaux collection and looking specifically for 2018 and 2019 vintages. Pleased to see my favorite appellations in your selection! Thank you for this very impressive video! I appreciate not only the visual and verbal content but also the production and editing value. Congratulations on yet another outstanding piece of wine content! Santé, John!
Was hesitating at the shop to buy le petit smith haut lafite, will def grab it next time!
Very nice choice! I would have expected at least one ehite from Entre-Deux-Mers and one white from Graves. But nice selection!
P.S.: I think château Dalem is a great value!
@0:01–"I did a lot of research" …Great euphemism. Taking one for the team. Our kidneys & livers thank you. What a Guy!🤣
Soooo random that we released the same topic today 😂🤣. Good call on pushing Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. I’m a big fan of the Le Petit, although I might prefer the white more than red 🥂.
le petit haut Lafite is a great recommendation ! This list is awesome to wine lovers that seek minerality and freshness , instead of full body low acid wines ! Cheers !
I am so happy to see that your subscribers are growing each time I see your newest video. As always great video and recommendations. So happy to hear about this kind of values since nowadays. Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks for another great video John! There is a lot of Bordeaux at this price point, sometimes difficult to find the good ones though. Really appreciate your recommendations. 🍷😎
I really love your content but the constant edits between each sentence makes me feel like I’m having a seizure
We visited smith haut Lafite and had lunch at restaurant. We met owner and he was kind enough to show us around and gave us tour…very nice man! He took us to his private cellar and opened so many bottles..made our day!
John, great video and very informative. I have another suggestion for a future video. "Estate-bottled" is a phrase not typically printed on a wine label. Their absence means the grapes used to make the wine were purchased from another party outside the wineries appellation. It would be interesting to learn how many wineries purchase their grapes rather than farming their own, and which famous wineries purchase some/all of their grapes. Thanks – Ed
More Spanish and Italian wines recommendations, please! Thanks
I have something to test your knowledge. Not sure if you can answer it.
I have noticed a pattern lately. This applies to both Bordeaux and Cabs. Since about 2015, the wines appear to be getting better. I am wondering if there has been a change in the wine making techniques lately. By the way. My method of measurement for this observation is the CellarTracker app. The app allows people like you and I to give our own rating. This creates a rating average which I value far more than any magazine. These averages have been noticeably higher across the board. Have you heard anything. Thanks
Great information and well done on the research. With 10,000 producers in Bordeaux it’s a minefield. I was there last week and they were picking the Merlot. Small berries from a dry year. Very impressed with Pessac Leognan and graves in general. These wines are giving the Medoc a run for their money now. I spent a lovely few hours with Jean-Pierre Meslier in Ch Raymond Lafon in Sauternes. We tasted the 2015. Interesting to see and taste the botrysised grapes before picking.
I bought 2019 bordeaux en primeur and made better deals laroque st emilion grand cru at 25$ for instance
Thanks for the tip on Chateau Montlandrie. Beautiful stuff. Went on a bit of a wine excursion to Austin this weekend and ended up at The Austin Wine Merchant. You should really check that place out if you’re ever in Austin. It will suck you in for hours.
Finally a realistic list
Fantastic video, John! My first thought was about Chateau Dalem – and here we are! Can't agree more. Btw, I've visited it exactly 1 year ago. In the same trip visited Les Troix Croix founded by Patrick Leon and run now by his son Bernardo. I would suggest you to keep eye on this Fronsac too. Thanks for the insightful tips! Have never heard about Chateau Montlandrie. Should taste it! Thanks!
I love these videos but I need a shopping list or photo of all wines at the end so I can buy them easily lol
Great video. I’m been discovering great value in Bordeaux. A little hidden gem I’ve been collecting is Château Lilian Ladouys Saint-Estephe, vintages 2018, 2019, 2020.
I keep seeing Chateau Cantemerle memntioned as having great QPR. Any opinion on it?
The Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte was recently at Costco for around %$21. Knowing the reputation of the Smith Haut Lafitte I took a chance and bought a bottle. it was a superb value for the money! Regrettably it was some time before I opened it and when i went back to purchase a case, it was all gone. You snooze, you lose.
My review of the 2019 and 2020 Labegorce: I tried each of these wines again in the past couple weeks and ordered another case of each, I now have like 16 bottles of each in my cellar. Chateau Labergorce is smoking! Both of these wines are brilliant and if you were going to ask me blind which appellation, maybe I'm being overly enthusiastic in the moment, but I would vote without hesitation… Margaux. I've been so enthusiastic about the 2019 and 2020 Bordeaux vintages. The pricing has been like, what?, how can you buy from the US or any other region? I mean, these two vintages of Labegorce closer to $30 than $40? Really? Tell me where that compares anywhere in the world, I'm here to listen, I'm guessing I'm going to fight you. Folks, every BWEer should have a case of 2019 and 2020 Labegorce in their cellar. You can get both of them in the $30 range, they are both drinkable now and for the next 20+ years, and, most importantly, they are very much "Margaux"…. 2019 has typically been slightly more structured than the slightly more ebullient 2020s but in this case I truly can't pick which I like better, the 2019 or 2020 Labegorce, so, when factoring in the PRICE (a HUGE factor, in my book), I'm rating both of these wines 95+ points. These are STUNNING Margaux appellation efforts at stunning prices. You are insane not to buy a case each of these two Labegorce vintages.
