  1. Merci bcp, Géraldine. Le site et la chaîne sont super! The language with the cultural tips is fun and insightful, and you are a lovely host. I wish you success!

  2. Merci pour ça, Géraldine! C’est un exemple parfait de quelque chose qui est si implicitement compris parmi les Français qu’ils oublient de l’expliquer à nous – les Américains.:)

  3. I think it's perfectly OK to drink wine in France outside of lunch and dinner times. In fact, it increasingly more common to drink wine socially without a meal and increasingly unacceptable to drink wine at lunch. Some employers even ban alcohol at lunchtime.

France is not what it used to be!

  4. Hi, Géraldine, how are you? Could you help me with a question in the pronunciation? I'm using "Google Translate" to practice my pronouncement, but when I say "Je te sers?" the application always understands "serre" and not "sers". I heard the two words and the pronunciation seems the same. That's right? Another thing, at the end of the video, the cards are covering the French text. Could you tell me if I understood correctly what you said? 2:48 – T'en veux encore plus ?; 2:51 – Ramène tes fesses (this expression would have the meaning of "Go to"?)

  5. I am living in Paris for a year. I do not like the taste of wine or any alcoholic beverages at all. Will I be considered strange if I don't drink any?

  6. i see french people drinking wine without food all the time, at all times of the day, so is it really a 'golden rule' ?

  7. There's certain amount I disagree with here. The first is that declaration that 'France is the country of wine'. This is simply not true. Italy, Spain and Germany, to name but 3 in europe, have traditions of wine as old as France and produce wines of world class.

Then there are the wines of the western hemisphere. Where would Bordeaux be now if it was not for "the only successful means of controlling phylloxera has been the grafting of phylloxera-resistant American rootstock (usually hybrid varieties created from the Vitis berlandieri, Vitis riparia and Vitis rupestris species) to more susceptible European vinifera vines"

Australia, South Africa and new Zealand produce wines at every level of quality except perhaps the most elevated of the Grand Cru chateaux of Bordeaux and Burgundy.

But you are not referring to those.

Everywhere I went [to local people's houses] in rural Brittany, the wine bottle would be produced, at all times of the day. Everyone, including our hosts, would have a glass. In fact, at 10:0011:00 in the morning, this was not what I would have chosen – especially the rough old stuff that was served up.

I agree that one would not offer a red table wine except with food but a glass of off-dry white – Sauvingnon de Tourraine, please! – or a kir, is perfectly acceptable as a choice to offer at 'cocktail hour' or around lunchtime as an aperitif.

When I was offered a glass of Chateau d'Yquem at about 12:00, as we were about to set up to photograph the very generous host who offered it, I would deserve to be shot if I'd declined on any grounds whatsoever but as never drinking alcoholic drinks.

France has a great deal to be proud of to this day, regarding its wines, but it its days as the only producer – or even pre-eminent producer – of quality wines have long gone.

  8. Is Haute Savoie an exception? Un petit rouge était tout à fait normal pendant la journée quand j’y habitais dans les années 90.

  9. Wouhaou, 8 ans en arrière, elle était belle !!!
    Je découvre la chaîne actuellement.

  10. Hello there. I thought it appropriate to start at the first page, as your collection of videos is a "story" or "journey"–at least somewhat so.

I'm having a little difficulty here. As we all know, different "drinking" habits exist in every culture. When you mentioned 4 PM, Americans would consider that as part of what we call "Happy Hour" (post work), which can range from 3 to 7 PM, depending on the time zone. Any alcoholic beverages may be ordered and served, including wine and it is not looked down upon what someone orders. Bars and Restaurants encourage this business.

So what would be another gripe about the "Ugly American" in France, might be considered insulting to us Americans coming to vacation and spending our hard earned money in France. Respect needs to go both ways.
