Can’t imagine French onion soup getting  any better than it already is? Well,   if you haven’t been to some of these  chains, you might be in for a surprise! Topped with Swiss and Parmesan cheese and  a crostini, Mimi’s Bistro + Bakery’s French

Onion Soup certainly looks the part. Although  the actual recipe is not readily available,   Restaurant Magazine believes that, aside  from Parmesan and Swiss cheese, the soup   is made with white onions, beef broth, butter,  garlic powder, mozzarella, and French bread. Despite the chain’s French pedigree, Mimi  Cafe’s French Onion Soup has received

Mixed reviews from patrons. Those who  enjoy the soup have described it as a   nourishing and tasty dish that has a thick  consistency and plenty of flavor. Others,   however, haven’t been as impressed,  with one Yelp reviewer saying, “It is the most God awful tasting French  onion soup I’ve ever tasted. The onions were

Only half cooked and the little flavor  that it had was utterly disgusting.” Another patron called the dish “inedible,” adding, “The French onion soup was under seasoned  and the fact that the soup was cold while   the cheese was congealed shows that  they heated it in a microwave.” “Oh hard pass.”

LongHorn Steakhouse serves appealing menu  options such as Parmesan Crusted Chicken,   Baby Back Ribs, and Grilled Chicken  & Strawberry Salad. The popular chain   also serves French onion soup,  crowned with a seasoned crostini,   a blend of melted provolone and Swiss  cheese, and a garlic and Parmesan crust.

While LongHorn Steakhouse’s French  Onion Soup is pretty affordable,   the menu item has evoked a range of  reactions from patrons. On a positive note,   one TripAdvisor reviewer says they haven’t been  able to find a better French onion soup at any   other restaurant, while another reviewer  says it’s “to die for.” On the downside,

Some customers haven’t been too impressed by  the menu item, with one Yelp reviewer saying, “The French onion soup was okay but  not a lot of depth to the flavor.” Outback Steakhouse’s French Onion Soup contains  a Holland Rusk. This stands in contrast to most

Other French onion soups out there, which  feature bread on the side or croutons. Also   known as Dutch Rusks, Holland Rusks are slightly  sweet, crispy, dry biscuits with a light and airy   texture. They have a round shape, similar to  a cracker or a small, round piece of bread.

The reactions to Outback Steakhouse’s French  onion soup have been a blend of enthusiasm   and disappointment. Some feedback  has been downright contradictory,   indicating that different locations  may have different standards when   it comes to making their dishes. For  instance, one Yelp reviewer states,

“The French onion soup comes out super HOT!!!!  Gotta wait a few minutes so it can cool down.   Once cooled down, it was good. Nice layer of  cheese and chunks of onion and spongy bread bits.” On the other hand, another patron on Yelp had  a completely different perspective, saying,

“My soup came out and it was cold. The broth  was like gravy, very thick. There was barely   any cheese on top of the bread. I am not one to  send things back, but I didn’t order gazpacho.” Capital Grille’s French onion soup is  pricier than similar dishes served at

Most other restaurants. Nevertheless, the  quality might just justify its price tag.   Served in a cute bowl with two handles,  Capital Grille’s Caramelized French Onion   Soup features a thick layer of melted cheese  in a broth filled with caramelized onions. While Capital Grille’s soup  looks great in pictures,

The dish has received a mix of positive and  negative feedback. One TripAdvisor reviewer,   who includes Capital Grille among their 10 top  restaurants, says that the soup is terrific.   Another French onion soup enthusiast  praises the dish on Facebook, saying, “Absolutely delicious. I’ve had it many times.”

When it comes to the amount of onions in the dish,  patrons seem undecided; one reviewer says that   it comes with “a ton of onions,” yet another says  that the beef broth lacks both onions and flavor. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar’s French  Onion Soup is expensive. Served as a steak

Dinner starter or as a main meal, this soup  stands out from the pack with its rich broth   and gooey topping. On top of that, it’s baked  with a blend of Parmesan and Gruyère cheese. This item seems to have left a positive  impression on most reviewers. One diner

On TripAdvisor calls it “French  onion soup for the soul,” adding, “The French Onion Soup was as good as  my own, laden with melted cheese on   garlic croutons floating in a good-sized  bowl of excellent beefy onion stock.” Many customers describe the dish with praise,

Noting its delicious flavor. On the flip side,  one Yelp patron wasn’t as impressed, saying, “French Onion Soup […] was good but small,  and the cheesy top was not fully capped.” Mon Ami Gabi’s take on French onion soup shines  on the chain’s menu. Baked with Gruyère cheese,

The majority of diners appear to be quite  pleased with its Onion Soup Au Gratin. Some describe the menu item as one of  the best versions of the soup out there,   noting that the offering comes with  a light broth and tasty cheese. One   happy Yelp reviewer also praises the soup, adding,

“A must-have! […] The gruyère had  a perfect ‘almost burnt’ finish. The   broth exuded that delicious beef and  onion aroma. The bread was perfectly   commensurate to the cheese and broth alike.” Panera Bread’s French onion soups  used to be great, but in 2020,

The chain decided to remove it from  its menu. Things only went downhill   from there. One dissatisfied fan even set  up a Facebook group to try to persuade the   chain to return to the original recipe. Panera  listened to its patrons and brought it back.

“At Panera Bread, bring back French  onion soup you cowards. Yeah.” At the heart of the chain’s Bistro French Onion  Soup is a savory broth made with caramelized   onions, sherry wine vinegar gastrique, and sea  salt. The dish, which is crowned with black pepper

Focaccia croutons and a Fontina and mozzarella  cheese blend, seems to have won over the hearts   of French onion soup enthusiasts. When surveyed by  The Daily Meal, 45.5% of the 622 respondents said   that Panera’s take on the dish is their absolute  favorite. However, not everybody has been as

Enthusiastic about the soup. Melina Glusac,  who reviewed the chain’s soups for Insider,   said that this menu item failed to meet her high  expectations. While Glusac appreciated the rich   flavor of the soup’s broth, she was disappointed  with its watery consistency and lack of cheese.

Made with three different cheeses, Morton’s The  Steakhouse Baked French Onion Soup is definitely   heavy on dairy. Not only does it come with Comté  cheese, but it also has Gruyère and Emmental mixed   into the broth. Morton’s rendition of the dish  features a crouton placed directly in the broth.

This item appears to have won over the  majority of reviewers. One satisfied   customer noticed the menu item’s  gooey quality, saying on Yelp, “The French onion soup is cheesy  […] and super delicious. It has   a great flavor to it. It’s also nice  to dunk pieces of bread in the soup.”

A reviewer on Facebook expresses  a similar sentiment, proclaiming, “This is definitely the best  French Onion soup anywhere.”

  1. I've eaten a lot of French Onion soup in my 61 years of life, and I can tell you my favorite restaurant to enjoy it at is the Capital Grille. It's far better than any of the other places mentioned here, which is sad because the closest Capital Grille is 3.5 hours drive away from my house, or an hours long flight. Fortunately for me, I travel alot , so I get it at least once a month. I start off with a salad, then soup, then a nice New York strip with peppercorn sauce. Pure foodgasm.

  2. I've recently switched to Gruyere cheese for any time I want cheese to melt. Melts better, blends better and tastes better. I use Aldi's shredded Swiss – Gruyere mix.

  3. Chain restaurant worker veteran here. Onion soup in chain restaurants comes frozen in a bag. The only difference between restaurants is type of cheese, type of bread and added flavors/ingredients. Some add sherry, additional onions etc…The soup is not kept warm but rather kept cold in a Cambro. Your soup is then heated in microwave then placed in Salimander to melt cheese. Some skip the preheating which means melted cheese but cold soup. Some don't give Cambro a stir and results in either all broth or all onions as the onions settle to bottom of Cambro. Scratch made onion soup is very time consuming, requires pounds upon pounds of onions and not cost effective to be made in house. Google an onion soup recipe it's tedious, time consuming process.

  4. No. The best WAS, the Jolly Ox, I worked there in 1975. Made from scratch daily, real beef stock, sherry, sweet onions, grated parmesan and toasted french bread, I watched it being made and often helped. No one else has come close. A bowl then cost $1.75, considered higher priced then and I could eat free then. No corporate rats on the ladder making more than their worth.

  5. The best French onion soup I’ve ever had was at the Silver Saddle in Tucson, Arizona (located right next to the 10 freeway).

  6. I live in a food desert (northern central MD). I often joke that our locals proudly boast of having both McDonald's AND Burger King. In truth, we have more than that, but no Flemmings, no Longhorn, no Morton's, no Capital Grille, not even a Shake Shack (much to my chagrin). So the best French Onion soup is definitely at Outback. With melty cheese and a sodium level that causes doctors to faint at the thought, it's the best that I have tried. Now, if I could only find the best vegetable beef soup…
