A very well known traditional song from France.
No medieval but renaissance dance music but we have tried to make a ‘modern interpretation’.
OK – everybody plays this song but we hope you like anyway 😉
Recorded in our small home studio:
– Voice
– Percussion
– Guitar
– Two flutes/recorders
The painting:
“Isabella” by John Everett Millais, 1849

### French Lyrics ###
Quand je bois du vin clairet (Tourdion)
Quand je bois du vin clairet,
Ami tout tourne, tourne, tourne, tourne…
Aussi désormais je bois
Anjou ou Arbois.
Chantons et buvons:
À ce flacon faisons la guerre!
Chantons et buvons
Mes amis; buvons donc!
De ce gras jambon
Mangeons pour oublier nos peines!
De ce gras jambon
Mes amis, mangeons donc!
Chantons et buvons:
Vive l’amour et la bouteille!
Chantons et buvons
Mes amis; buvons donc!

Commentaires:
The tourdion is a type of late-Medieval, early-Renaissance dance particularly popular in the Burgundian court. This particular tourdion derives from a song first published by Pierre Attaignant in 1530 as «La Magdalena», which was later re-arranged by an anonymous musician into the song presented above.

When I Drink Claret (Bordeaux) Wine
When I drink claret (Bordeaux) wine
My friend, everything turns, turns, turns, turns…
Now, I also drink
Anjou or Arbois.
Let’s sing and drink:
Let’s declare war on that wine flask!
Let’s sing and drink
My friends; let’s drink, then!
From that fatty ham
Let’s (all) eat to forget our sorrows!
From that fatty ham
My friends, let’s eat, then!
Let’s sing and drink:
Long life to love and the bottle!
Let’s sing and drink
My friends; let’s drink, then!

what flute did you took for the lower notes? I have an Alt-flute (Altflöte) but I can‘t reach the lower tones.
this is so so good can't stop listening
One of the loveliest versions I've heard!
They did a great job in song's tempo as some versions seem to be on fast forward.
Definitely one of my favourites to listen to.
Love the picture as well.
The march of the swordmaster brought me here. beautiful

great work people
Such a good song… It has some vibes from other styles and it's perfectly mixed into one song, such as Celtic and Bolivian music
If you ever travel to France, try and stop by Anjou (it's a beautiful region) or Arbois, a nice little town not far from Switzerland. And get a bottle of wine, while you're at it.
I don't speak French did somebody tell me how the lyrics translate to English thanks in advance to anyone who can help
This served as inspiration for the music "Rhapsody of Fire – March of the Swordmaster"

I find it a bit funny that one of the rare medieval French songs that has passed the ages is a song about wine

Even if i prefer the sound of ancient instruments , your interpretation is pretty good !
Bravo !

Bises from France.
This is the original Medioeval Music that Angelo Branduardi copied in italian soundtrack called: "Donna ti voglio cantare".
