Looks like we are starting off 2020 with a bang!
When it comes to french collectible wines, the Southern Rhone Valley has some of the best, especially in the small appellation of Chateauneuf du Pape. These wines are some of the most age worthy wines in the world. 2017 was a good vintage in the Southern Rhone and the wines are really showing well.
The big secret to Clos St. Jean, is the winemaker. Phillipe Cambie is an absolute legend in the Rhone Valley. Most known for making some of the highest rated and sought after wines. The Vielle Vigne is Clos St. Jeans oldest vines, planted back in 1905. It is 100% Grenache and most known for being dark fruited and full bodied.
If you plan on drinking it now, give it a heavy and long decant, otherwise, this is the kind of wine that needs some time in the cellar. Lay it down for a couple years and it will be really hitting its stride.
Don’t be afraid to save it for the next 10-15 years, as it will evolve beautifully.
