Today our Wine Director, David Allen MW, tastes a bottle of a classic Greek red, from the slopes of Mount Olympus – Tsantali’s Rapsani Reserve 2016
Tsantali is a family-owned wine estate with vineyards located in five regions throughout northern Greece, in Halkidiki, Mount Athos, Rapsani, Maronia and Naoussa.. The Tsantali family has been cultivating vineyards since 1890, and today specialize in making traditional wines from indigenous Greek grape varieties, including Assyrtiko, Aidani, Krassato, Stavroto and Xinomavro. Tsantali is particularly known for its range of red, white and sweet PDO wines from the Greek appellations of Rapsani, Naoussa, Amyndeon and Santorini. they als grow smaller quantities of international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon.
Evangelos Tsantalis, who took control of the business in 1938, was responsible for the estate’s considerable development and growth. He quickly established the first winery in Serres in 1938, followed by its first distillery in Thessaloniki in 1945. In 1995, Tsantali was certified as an organic winemaker, and today is the largest producer of organic wines in Greece.
The grapes are hand-harvested between the months of August and October. After fermentation, the wines mature in French and American oak for varying lengths of time depending on the style and variety of wine. This is then followed by bottle maturation.
