After spending their entire lives in the French diplomatic service, Count de Gruse and his wife lived in an opulent residence on Quai Voltaire. He was charming, naturally cultured, and well-known for being a kind host and a sharp storyteller.
This evening’s guests were all from Europe and they were all equally adamant that immigration was to blame for the continent’s issues. Chuck de Gruse didn’t say anything. He had never been open about how he felt about such ideas. In any event, he had never expressed much fondness for these particular guests.
As the first glass of red Bordeaux was poured beside the veal, one of the guests turned to look at de Gruse. The guest tells Chuck that you know neither race nor color is relevant. But De Gruse raised his glass without saying a word and introduced his wine-filled, bulbous nose. He praise the wine and called it ” a truly full-bodied Bordeaux,” a wine among wines.”
