Chateau Du Tertre (pronounced “do teh tra”) is a 5th Growth wine from the Margaux region.

The winer is named Tertre because Tertre in French means hillk or rising ground, which is where the vineyards are located. It has had numerous ownership changes during its history.

In the 1700s, Chateau du Tertre today was owned by Pierre Mitchell, a noted Bordeaux glassblower. He is responsible for creating the Jeroboam bottle. In 1961 Chateau du Tertre was sold to Philippe Gasqueton, who at that time also owner Calon Segur. In 1995 the Gasqueton family sold the winery to Eric and Louise Albada Jelgersma, who were owners of Chateau Giscours at that time. The brought in Alexander van Beek discontinued machine harvesting and move to pick by hand. Portions of the vineyards were replanted as well.

In January 2021, Chateau du Tertre was sold to the Helfrich family, who have vineyards in Alsace and Bordeaux.

The winery is 54 hectare in size consisting of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Malolactic fermentation takes place in a combination of French oak barrels and vats: 40% in barrel and 60% in concrete vats. The wine spends typically18 months in 50% new, French oak barrels.
