Did you know that to this day, that classic green Chartreuse liqueur involves monks, mountains, and 130 mystery ingredients?
I visited the famous Chartreuse cellars in Voiron, France and here’s some if the alcohol history:
📜 To this day, only two people, both being monks, know the recipe. Even employees at the chartreuse distillery and other monks at the monastery don’t fully know.
🏔️ It’s made in the Chartreuse Mountains in France where the monastery sits about 25 km from where it’s distilled in the cellars. The monks visit the distillery every Monday to sample the liqueurs and check on their progress.
🧪 It derives from an elixir of ‘long life’. Its recipe was discovered over 400 years ago which eventually morphed into a new variation which is what we now know as Chartreuse. You can still buy the elixir today which we got to sample- and it’s 69%!
