Have you ever been asked to shave your beard to stay employed at a job? What would you have done if it became a law to shave your beard. In this brief story of history, we discuss how one industry of French Men when on the Great French mustache strike to protest the French government. The mustache is as iconic to the French Men as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. So when fine dining establishments began to become popular and men were hired as waiters, it was understandable for the French waiters to be angry when forced to shave their mustaches. See the Mustache became popular during the Napoleon area when the French military admired the Hungarian Hussars and started to wear mustaches into battle. The French military wore mustaches as a badge of honor. The mustache was a representation of time served in the French Military. The military mustache was so popular that the noblemen of France also sported these new fashion trends. However, to provide the fine dining experience, waiters were forced to shave so that they would appear as lesser men to the wealthy aristocrats that dined at the establishments. It wasn’t until the French government began to set forth a plan to ban all mustaches for waiters, priest, and domestic servants. This caused such an uproar among the French waiters that they went on strike demanding the freedom to wear a mustache. In April of 1907 the Great French Mustache strike had begun and protestors marched down the streets of Paris. The French history reports, that the great French mustache strike only lasted until mid May. However, the French waiters had changed French mustache history forever because in 1907, Paris France is now full of proud mustache wearing men who fought for their rights and won their freedom. The military mustache was now all over the 1907 Europe countries and 19th century history was written.
