One of my most uncomfortable reviews. I know very little about German wines and I find them very difficult to pronounce. But the great thing about German wines is that there is so much information on the label.
Firstly, Weingut is a wine producing property in Germany, similar in concept to a French Chateau. Schwaaw-Kiebel is a family owned winery located in the village of Ürzig, which is located in the Mosel, region of Germany. The winery has around 5.5 hectares of grape producing land and all of their grapes are hand picked.
Ürzinger Würzgarten refers to the vineyard or place in Mosel where the grapes come from. This winery prides itself on being able to produce long lived Rieslings.
Splatlese refers to the sweetness of the and means “Late Harvest”. Didn’t get it quite right in the video on the sweetness codes but the one we normally see in North America, from less sweet to more sweet is Kabinett, Splatlese and then Auslese. There are 3 other even sweeter designations of wine, the sweetness being Eiswein. All these would be consider off dry wines.
