Wine in Burgundy has been a big deal since the Romans and the monks in the Middle Ages, who introduced a zoning process which classified the different vineyards, or Crus. This is one of the reasons for Burgundy’s success, but much has also to do with the winemaking techniques that producers, from monks to modern Domaines, crafted and passed on.
In this video you will learn some of these techniques, and how they changed the way wine is made in this part of France, from the so-called Vendange Entière, or “Whole Harvest”, to the use of small wooden containers for the aging process and the traditional Bâtonnage, a process used to stir the wine during fermentation.
