All about French lavender.
Where else to know all about French lavender but to visit two landmark places in Provence.
First stop is the Lavender Museum or Musée de la Lavande. Located deep within the Luberon area, the museum is in the village of Coustellet. The entire museum is located in one brick building. The tour starts with a film viewing that takes you on a journey through the museum owner’s lavender farm – from seeding right through to harvesting and the production of fine lavender oil. After the film, you are ushered to the main exhibition hall showing the different stills used to produce the much sought after oil. The final stop is our favorite, the boutique where you get to try different uses of the lavender oil and shop for all your lavender needs!
After the informative tour, we visited the beautiful Senanque Abbey. Also known as Abbaye Notre-Dame de Senanque, it is a Cistercian abbey in the Luberon village of Gordes. The abbey was originally founded in 1148 AD by a bishop of Provence. During summer, the entire abbey is surrounded by lavender fields. While this place is still an active monestary, visitors can still tour the entire abbey and buy the different lavender products made in house.
Enjoy!
