🧳 LOVELY MIMI:
🇮🇳 CALI TARDKA:
✈️ CHECK OUT MY TRAVEL BLOG:
My quest to introduce as many people as possible to the wonders of Indian food continued in Los Angeles with the one and only Lovely Mimi! Come with me as I eat Punjabi food with Lovely Mimi at an Indian home restaurant in Riverside, California!
Lovely Mimi is a reality TV superstar, nail artist, and rapper you may know from shows like “Wildin’ Out” and “Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta.” I couldn’t wait to teach her all about the rich, creamy, and fatty cuisine from Punjab!
👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:
For our deep dive into Punjabi food, we headed over to Cali Tardka, the first commercially licensed home restaurant in the United States! Mimi and I both like things spicy, so I was hoping for some heat!
There, we met Manu and Priya, who is the mom and chef! Cali Tardka is super popular and sells out every single day! They have a regular home kitchen, as well as a commercial kitchen out back.
In their home kitchen, they were preparing butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. They used grilled breast meat in both, but the chicken tikka masala gravy was bright red, while the butter chicken was more of a yellowish orange.
They don’t use any butter in their butter chicken to be more health-conscious! Mimi fed me and my cameraman Nick some of the butter chicken gravy, which had some sweetness from the coconut! It was really tasty!
In addition to the two chicken dishes, we also had aloo gobi, chicken biryani, chicken curry, masala fries topped with chicken tikka masala, chicken tikka tardka burger, and more! We had 10 dishes in total!
We started with fried aloo samosas, which contain potatoes and peas. It was outstanding with the tamarind chutney. The mint chutney had a spicy kick to it!
Their chicken tikka masala fries contained both chutneys. It was so creamy, and the gravy was unreal. I loved the chunks of chicken. The fries were crispy due to the flour coating and they had some sweetness, too!
Next, they made us some garlic naan in the kitchen. They made it on a sort of griddle instead of in a traditional tandoor. We ate it with the butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. The chicken tikka masala gravy was thick and creamy and super flavorful!
The butter chicken was also fantastic. The food was incredible! The gravies were so good, we had to lick the plate!
Next, we jumped on the Tardka burger, which you dress with the chutneys. The patty felt like a smoky, juicy kebab! Then, we tried the aloo gobi, shahi paneer, and saag without the paneer. The shahi paneer was really nice, while the saag was bitter and creamy, and filled with greens!
I loved the aloo gobi as well. I love cauliflower, so it’s right up my alley! Then, we tried the chicken biryani and chicken curry. The addition of the mint chutney made it even tastier!
Finally, we finished with gulab jamun, which was very sweet and coated with coconut. We also had a crumbly carrot halwa, and a sugary block called besan. It crumbled in my mouth!
We ended with chai, which was gingery and contained cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. What a fun—and hilarious—experience!
