La Spinetta was established in the 1960s by Guiseppe Rivetti. By 1977, he had turned over management to his children, Carlo, Bruno, Giorgio, and Giovanna, who still own the winery today.
They started out making Moscato, then slowly turned their attention to Barbera and Barbesco.
In 2000, they purchased vineyards near Grinzane Cavour. They immediately turned it around by green harvesting and improving harvesting and production techniques.
The lion drawing on the bottle is drawn by Albrecht Durer. Because Barolo is the king of wines or the wine of kings, they thought it was appropriate to have the king of the jungle, the lion, on the label.
This wine is made 100% with Nebbiolo grapes. It spends 14-15 days in maceration and alcoholic fermentation in temperature controlled vats. Malolactic fermentation is done in French oak barrels (20% new) and then the wine is aged 24 months in new oak barriques. Then it is aged for a minimum of 12 months in bottle before release. The average age of the vines is 70 years.
They only produce around 7000 bottles of this wine each year.
Here is a question for my viewers….what does Vursu mean?
