The French Croissant is a pastry, popular in France and elsewhere in the world. The dough is made from wheat flour, water, yeast, salt and butter or margarine which creates a layered loaf of bread that can be rolled up into a crescent shape. It’s often eaten for breakfast with coffee or tea. In France it’s called “pain au chocolate” if it has chocolate inside.
The croissant was introduced to North America by Viennese bakers who came to New Orleans during the 18th century Louisiana Purchase at the request of Napoleon III’s wife Empress Eugenie de Montijo to teach French baking techniques to American women because there were no professional female bakeries
