A Provence winemaker described the damage wrought by wildfires in the Var region on her vineyard in La-Garde-Freinet on Wednesday.
Burnt trees, destroyed outbuildings, and scorched vines could be seen at the Domaine Mirabeau vineyards, where co-owner Jeany Cronk explained the impact of the fires.
“Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday we had a massive fire that just ripped through basically all the forest that you see around,” said Cronk.
“We were completely surrounded by flames and then the fire came really inside of our property and burned a couple of out buildings and it was really really threatening,” she stressed.
“We almost lost the houses and, you know, you can see some, obviously some damage to the vines.”
The vineyard is investigating to see if the grapes have been damaged further by the smoke and are looking to recover and harvest the vines.
Around 200 producers out of 4,000 in the region, which is known for its rose production, are thought to have been badly hit by the fires, according to French media.
SOT, Jeany Cronk, Owner of Domaine Mirabeau: “We are just below La-Garde-Freinet close to the little village of Vidauban. Well Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday we had a massive fire that just ripped through basically all the forest that you see around. We were completely surrounded by flames and then the fire came really inside of our property and burned a couple of out buildings and it was really really threatening. We almost lost the houses and, you know, you can see some, obviously some damage to the vines.”
SOT, Jeany Cronk, Owner of Domaine Mirabeau: ” I probably estimate around 20 percent of our vines have got real, you know, real heat damage. And then we need to – basically we’re just running some tests to see if whether there’s any smoke taint, you know, whether you have the taste of smoke in the wines. So we should know a lot more in a few days time, but its obviously not great.”
SOT, Jeany Cronk, Owner of Domaine Mirabeau: “I mean vines are incredible plants and we think that they are really going to recover. So even the very damaged ones we are going to harvest, , you know, we’re going to prune them.”
