The Von Winning Estate is a proudly historical one – founded in 1849 and reaching peak production in the early 1900s. In more recent times however, it fell into disrepair, before being reinvigorated in 2007. The new era of success for Von Winning has now arrived, helmed by expert winemaker Stephan Attmann.
The winery is located in the Pfalz region, in the southwest of Germany, not far from the French border into Alsace. It is one of the warmer regions in the country, and produces powerful dry wines of great clarity and expression. A lot of the vigour of these wines is down to the old vines that they have access to, along with innovative plantings – often very close together. A hands-off approach is taken to the viticulture insofar as inputs are concerned – the work is totally sustainable, and the vineyards are healthy and vibrant because of it. The collection of wines, based on some scintillating Rieslings, are really special – full of character and power. Each vintage they seem to take on another dimension, and the potential of the vineyards seems infinite.
A really complex rosé here, with some extra texture and colour. Made from a blend of local varieties Spätburgunder, Lemberger and St.Laurent (all of which are fairly uncommon in Australia!), it offers up some lovely scents of ripe strawberry, lychee and rose petal. The palate is off dry, with a whisper of fruitiness, but finishes clean and fresh.
