The video by Ritesh Lakhi discusses the case of Katia Darnand, a French National and tourist whose fight for justice is still incomplete. After almost 27 years of the case that rocked the Indian state of Punjab, Katia is pessimistic about the state of affairs vis a vis administration of justice in India. As late as 2017 Katia wrote a passionate letter to an Indian English News Daily spelling her thoughts and concerns over the acquittal of seven persons including Gurkirat Singh, the grandson of then Chief Minister of Punjab Beant Singh.
The case dates back to August 31, 1994 when Katia along with two of her friends was dining at a local restaurant in Chandigarh and was confronted by one Gurkirant Singh, grandson of the then mighty Chief Minister of Punjab Beant Singh. Having stalked her right upto the place of her temporary residence in Mohali the accused forcibly took Katia along amidst protestations by her friends. Early in the morning Katia came back with a tale of humiliation and complained to the police. Following few days were challenging and trying ones with the entire case blowing out in the media and inexpressible pressure upon Katia for retracting from her statement amidst lot of public outcry in her favour. However, having identified Gurkirat Singh and others in an identification parade, Katia left defeated for her native country France in the first week of September to never return back. Back in India the case fell flat as complainant was missing and witnesses turned hostile with no one to follow the case up to its logical conclusion.
