Marc Lamont Hill talks to journalist and podcast host Jemele Hill about tennis star Naomi Osaka withdrawing from the French Open, citing mental health and the resulting backlash.
“This is an example of tennis bodies, collectively in sports, they decided they were going to show this woman of color where her place was,” Jemele Hill says. “They really brought a bazooka to a rock fight.”
Osaka was fined $15,000 for declining to speak to the press following her match, and ultimately withdrew from the tournament. In a statement, Osaka says she’s faced bouts of depression since 2018, following her controversial win over Serena Williams.
