9 km north of Colmar is the Michel Fonné winery, which covers 13 hectares in Bennwihr, Mittelwihr, Sigolsheim and Colmar. Here, since 1747, the family has been making classic Alsatian wines with personality and character.
Several of the fields here are Grand Cru fields, and all grapes are sorted and picked by hand. Michel is a winemaker/oenologist and has worked with soil conditions for decades.
He produces many types of wine and makes a virtue because each vine must fit exactly to the plot in the fields. He maintains that the grapes are not picked at the same time – but when they are ready. Besides, he squeezes the grapes very slowly to get as much flavour out of them as possible.
