What wine goes well with steak?

It depends on the steak. Is it a fatty cut like a ribeye or more
delicate like a tenderloin?

Tannins in red wine interact with fat in the steak, so tannin level is a key
decision maker in selection. Full bodied wines tend to have more tannins which is why most steak pairing are full bodied red wine.

Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon and Ironstone Zinfandel are two full bodied wines that pair nicely with fattier cuts of steak and richer meals.

We recommend Cibolo Monastrell and Guado a Melo Jassarte Rosso which two medium bodied wines for tenderloin or strip-loin.

Ironstone Zinfandel is a decadent wine, full of rich chocolate and coffee liqueur aromas and flavour. Brambly black and red fruit balance the intensity of this flagship California Zinfandel, bold enough to standup to any cut of meat.

Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon is quintessential Napa Cab at a bargain price. Juicy black currant and blackberry fruit mingles with mint leaf and pencil shaving aromas. A big and powerful wine for a big steak.

Cibolo Monastrell is a playful and crunchy for a grape variety that can be savoury and challenging, this organic wine from Spain is firm enough to require red meat, but not so intense it drowns out the elegance of finer cuts.

Twelve years have mellowed this powerful wine – Guado a Melo Jassarte Rosso – making it perfect for a leaner cut of steak. Black pepper and fig flavours combine with the rustic quality Italian wine is known for to create something truly special.

Not sure about the steak you have? Go for a more flexible wine…

Bardos Ribero del Duero and Castello Banfi Centine Rosso are two awesome wines that go really well with most steak dinners.

Bardos Ribero del Duero is a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon made in the modern style, with inky black fruit, spice and dark chocolate. It is firmly structured from its time in brand new French oak barrels.

Castello Banfi Centine Rosso – a red blend from Tuscany is mostly Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot making up the remainder. Solid tannins make this great with food, and cherry, spice, strawberry and liquorice flavours are complex enough to make drinking this on its own a delight.
